Hijet no warm air.

Post by cmorse on Wed Oct 17, 2012 4:19 pm

Hey guys,

Ive had my hijet for a month now and its blowers have been working fine. Hot air coming out to clear the windscreen and warm my feet. However its now not working at all. Any ideas what might have stopped them?

Thanks,

I'll guess it's not blowing on any speed setting: check fuse first.

did a crude one in paint!

1 = lever and "door" to direct heat from inside or outside
2 = lever which controlls where your want the air blown, and the door that opens when its set to the first or second setting, it is controlled by cables, if i remember rightly a bit like the ones that controll gear leavers on a push bike, maybe the cable has detatched, or the door has broken?
3 = these tubes slot into the bottom inside of the dash to direct the air through the vents onto windscreen

there is more going on inside behind the doors, but i dont have any pictures of this, i dont remember there being anything that moves with the levers, and much as i now wish id paid a bit more attention... im not taking the dash off again!!!

under the rad (circled) is the gadget that is cotrolled from the heater lever, if the cable comes detached you will either have always cold air or always hot air dependin on what position it was when the cable came off, you cant actualy see the cable here, it is obscured by the sponge on the left, but again its like the cables on a push bike

Hey guys thanks for all the replies! Its actually not blowing any air on cold or hot or any setting. Is this more likely to do with the fuse?

Where can i locate it?

The fuse is in the fuse block below the dash, about 10" above the clutch pedal. You'll see the symbol for a fan on the cover, fuse should be directly behind that.

Mine's the same. The handbook isn't very clear on this, but I think it suggests the dash vents are for ventilation, thus unheated, and the screen and lower outlets are for heating.

Yeah its not working on any speed settings or on hot or cold. Im getting a faint bit of warm air coming out of the windscreen blowers and foot blowers when nothings on, so there is a bit of temperture heating through.

Blower action and air temperature are 2 seperate things. Air is warmed as it goes through a small radiator behind the dash (heated by water in the engine), and you'll get a small amount of air through when driving due to the van pushing through the air. When you turn the temperature lever to cold, air coming into the van doesn't go through this radiator.

When you turn on the blower, the incoming air is pushed faster into the van, irrespective of temperature setting. It's like the cooling fan on a car's radiator. The more air that passes through the radiator fins the more heat it absorbs, cooling the water in the rad.

So if it's not the fuse you must have a problem with the wiring to the blower or blower switch, or the actual motor that drives the blower fan. I think I'd start with the switch first, check there's power to it.

Right then, so the fans don't work. This is going to be one of 3 things, most likely 2 of them from what your saying.

If it worked on some speeds and not others I'd say its going to be the switch or the resistor pack. But it doesn't work at all so....

If it works on no speeds at all then its either the fan motor or the resistor pack. (unless it's something to do with power to the whole system e.g. fuse or broken wire)

So the first item to visually inspect is the resistor pack in my opinion which is a simple task.

It is bolted into the drivers side of the heater under the dashboard, it has a 10mm bolt holding it in from memory, and it has an electrical plug going into it with I think 4 wires.

Unbolt and unplug it, and have a look at the little coils of wire, I bet one of the main ones has burnt out. If this is the case I have a spare one Laughing

Other than that simple check, and pulling the heater control panel off to make sure non of the plugs have come disconnected which I doubt, its a case of doing some electrical fault finding e.g. make sure there is power going to the switch, make sure the switch switches ok, then make sure the power is getting to the fan motor etc etc.

Right forget most of that, I've just taken a fan speed resistor out of my parts van to double check what I've said and it's not entirely correct!

This is the wiring layout for the heater fan system :-

As you can see, if it was the resistor pack at fault top speed would still work.

So the fault must be somewhere in the switch or the motor or the fuse or wiring - to pin it down!!

So to test with your multimeter, put it on the volts mode, and see if your getting 12v where the fuse plugs in, if that is ok move onto the next step.

Now take the centre bit of the dash board off, unplug the fan switch connector and make sure three of the pins get 12v (all of them except the white and black wire which is ground), and the white/black wire should give you continuity down to the chassis ground.

If your not getting all three of the 12v feeds to the switch, it says either the fan is duff or the wiring from the fuse to the fan is at fault.

If you don't get ground continuity on the white and black wire at the switch plug the ground is at fault.

If all of these test are ok, then the switch is at fault. (funnily I have a spare one of these (shameless plug)) Wink Laughing

Now all that aside, if you want to see a good fan speed resistor it should look like this:-

But if you ever need to take it out a word of warning, its a right bloody arse!!! You have to take the clocks out to get to it then struggle like hell.

Hope this gets you fixed.

I might actually look this weekend to see if my resistor pack has burnt out as setting 1 stopped a couple of months back. HJ can you give us a resistance reading from both coils please.

I sure can, but really you just look at them and see one coil that has a bit missing. I've locked up my garage for tonight but I'll test it out tomorrow and post up the readings.

I've changed them on lots of cars before, the ones that are a pain are the modern ones that use pulse width modulation (pwm) instead so they use a mosfet transistor and a pile of complicated electronics. Heres one I fixed on a peugeot 406 hdi estate about a year back:-

1.2 ohm and 2.4 ohm, I think, but its pretty hard to get solid reading of them.

Robbed daisyd's picture as it shows the resistor pack. But so you know, you can't get to it via the little panel on top of the dash as I tried that first.

Was thinking about replacing the burnt out coil with a ceramic on a heat sink as I can get them from maplins or if not then I can butcher one from something else to get the fan working was even considering a sliding pot and having a range rather than a choice.
