Just to say hello

Post by casper1483 on Fri Dec 21, 2012 11:02 pm

Just saying hello, had a few sooty vans ( Bedford Rascals ) but they all dropped to bits, just acquired a 37 thou mile Hijet back off the person that I sold it to 5 years ago, I've serviced it and done all the work on it so couldn't resist buying it back, going to do the micro camper thing to it, quite fancy the VW split screen front as I know the VW purists love em, is there any do's and don'ts with these, I'm told they overheat but never been an issue with this, Thanks

Underseal it well before it desolves to a puddle of rust water?!

Keep the coolant system in good service?

Enjoy driving round in another silly little van?!

Welcome to the forum mate!

VW fronts are cool but you'll have to make it, keep in mind air flow for the radiator.

Show us some pictures too. I like a nice low mileage well serviced hijet.

Does look like a clean van, get the T-cut and a touch up pen on it if its lost its shine etc. That staining under the lock disappears with t-cut.

Think it might need more than that, it's been brush painted, don't look too bad at a distance, thinners brings it off, god knows why he did it,

People have some strange ideas going on!

Do you think it might be okay under the extra paint?

Got some 15 " alloys fitted, they came off a m reg fiesta, same stud pattern, they dont rub on owt and stick out a bit but I intend to widen the arches, it's transformed the handling even drifts abit :-/, I've also fitted rear side windows ready for the micro camper conversion ......

Sorry but the fiesta has PCD 108 wheels while the hijet has pcd 110.

You can sort of bolt them on, but it causes the studs to bend and also can make the studs break! Not that you really want a wheel falling off.

You can fit pcd 108 wheels, but you'll need some wobble nuts as they are known to make them safe.

Read this:-

http://www.daihatsuhijet.co.uk/hijet-wheels-pcd-4x110/

My pickup had PCD 108 wheels fitted when I bought it. If you take a wheel off and look at the studs afterwards you can see they have been splayed out a bit.

also the front hubs don't take ford wheels so they are probably aftermarket jobbies I have a Saab space saver spare for the car as it's 108mm PCD but the hub centre has more clearance so would probably fit with some wobbles.

I know what you mean with the 108 and the 110 pcd as I tried an early escort wheel on as I was told these fit but as you say the wheel goes on but the studs aren't in the centre of the hole, so I tried these others and their bang on, but I will check to make sure :-/

It could turn out that you've bought PCD4x110 wheels which had been forced onto the fiesta incorrectly!!! Laughing If so total winner mate!!!

As you can see from this wheel fitments table, they have never ever ever made a ford with PCD4x110. It is a very rare bizarre wheel size which was only used on a few odd Japanese cars in the 1970's and then some bloody daihatsu hijets and the daihatsu cuore avanzato TR-XX.

--->>> Tries to post but says theres a new post!

Bending a stud with tenson is not a very good idea, as you can imagine putting the stud under tension with a bend will put all the pressure onto a certain spot of the stud, and as they are threaded it will want to split/rip the steel open. If you think about how much a tyres bends and squishes on the outer wheels on a roundabout you'll realise there is a hell of a lot of force running through those little 8mm diameter studs. Maybe my crude exaggerated diagram will help explain:-

And also, just incase your lucky enough for them to not break causing a (pretty minor) major accident were the van ends up like this Laughing Laughing Laughing walk/limp away hopefully. I love hijets, but I sure as F*** don't want to crash one:-

In order to replace a snapped stud you have to take the whole hub off the van which is a much bigger job than buying some wobble nuts Wink

My own preference has been to buy some PCD4x110 wheels, which have taken quite some luck and patience, but both sets have been cheaper than a set of wobble nuts. Nobody wants PCD4x110 wheels, so it they have them they can't sell them! Problem is anyone who wants some 4x110 wheels can't find the bloody things Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Thanks for the advice chaps, that's why I joined the club, not new to spanners but I would have never realised the difference, as a FireFighter I've seen the aftermath of dodgy mods, I think I'd rather come off my motorbike than crash an Hijet, steels are back on, I've got four alloys with good tyres and wheel nuts for sale ..... Anybody :-)

8mm really I thought they were 12mm which is what is fitted to our MPV

Stud size was just a guess off the top of the head sir! Excuse my appalling failure No

At least on the bike you have half a chance of jumping out of the impact!
