Dodgy Fuel Guage

Post by Logi on Fri Jan 18, 2013 5:30 pm

The Newjet has a wee bitty tempremental fuel guage, once it goes down and I fill it it takes some time to register full.
What I hadnt realised till this morning was it sticks at quarter and doesnt drop either.
Just looked up the Hijet tank capacity and it says 32 litres. If thats right I musta been low today.
31.6 litres on the reciept affraid

If the later clocks are the same as the ones I have taken apart then there are no stops so if you took the front off and work the needle back and forth you might clear it when I have had the needles off I prefer to brim the tank and then pull the needle off and stick it on the full mark it seems to show empty before it runs out that way the 993's don't have a low fuel light.

Handbook for my '95 998 van says 35 litres (actually, it says 3.5 but gives 7.7 gallons as a comparison which = 35l). I did get 31 litres in once though. Wonder why they changed the size of the tanks, or was it always different for the 1.3?

That reminds me, about 2 years ago both my jets started registering only 3/4 when filled. Did the cut-off on pumps become more sensitive around then perhaps?

TBH i'm hoping it's just sticky with lack of use, it's averaged around 15 miles a week over the last 12 years, it's now doing about 300 so i'll wait & see (and fill it every 200 miles Wink )

Did you get this fixed?

The new 1.3 Hijet I picked up today has a similar issue.
Doesn't read a full tank when fuel over flowed.. Only got to half...
From today's drive... I got 150 miles from one tank...

Nope, i will get round to it at some point...., maybe Very Happy

Mines reads full after a wee bit, then works ok till 1/3rd then stops, i just fill mine every 200 miles.

Should be pretty easy to fix.

Test the sender, and if its dead, you can buy brand new ones off ebay Italy for about £20.

Ground wire on the gauge sender on top of the tank is prone to rotting and falling off, but then the light wouldn't work.
