rear axle noise

Post by huchman on Tue Jan 22, 2013 8:32 pm

Hi, I'm Olivier from France.
My Piaggio Porter Van (year 2000 - unleaded) EFI makes a lot of noise - right rear wheel.
Do you know if there is a ball bearing in the right rear wheel?
Otherwise, do I have to change the whole rear axle?
Thanks
O

Hi and welcome there will be at least one bearing my manuel is for a much earlier model so I haven't looked but usually the best bet is to replace bearings in axle pairs so if you do one side do the other most live axles have bearings at the diff and then the wheel bearings are the ones that wear more as they are the smaller ones and there is usually a oil seal which should also be replaced and the half shaft has to be removed with a slide hammer.

I'd agree with rich there, not stripped one down yet, but there will be a hub bearing, and a diff bearing on each side, plus an oil seal.

Thanks a lot, guys
OK There are bearings. I imagine it isn't easy to remove and that it is much more difficulte to reinstall.
Is the slide hammer a Piaggio Dahiatsu tool? Can I find the kit on the net? Because in France, I can't find one in any retailer. Can you give me an address in the UK?
Of course, I will change both sides.

Any fairley heavy universal slide hammer plus some adaptation I have seen inside live axles but never had to do it my self normally it is remove the drum and then a sort of puller type attachment so you can bang the half shaft out there are a few ways they are retained and that is a manuel look up then the bearings should be obvious normally the diff stays complete with it's bearings and it is just the wheel ones that need changing on that thought you should be able to locate which wheel has the failing bearing but you might have to take the drums off first. I think I would get some transmission oil for the diff and check it is filled up to the level.

Hi
bad news: in fact, the bearing belt is not faulty
but the complete rear axle is...
I would like to know if the model is the same for a diesel and a petrol as I must look for a second-hand on the web now.
Thanx

Complete axle faulty? Surely not - maybe bearings, half-shafts, diff, casing but not the whole essieu arrière

Sorry to sound like Brucie on Play Yer Cards Right, but higher or lower? I would sacrifice low down pulling power for a more relaxed cruising speed.

The axle is nothing but a sum of its parts.

Axle final drive ratios are on my website www.daihatsuhijet.co.UK under the information menu in the gear ratios page.

I have a 1.3 petrol rear axle spare and I live in Crewe.

It's complete with brakes, diff the lot.
