Exhaust again.

Post by kentgpz11 on Mon Mar 15, 2010 3:41 pm

Last year I replaced the completely rotten & broken silencer & tailpipe on our Hijet with an old one from a Kawasaki that I found in my garage.

Well it's been blowing recently, so I took it off yesterday...

Beyond repair, so I dug another one out & made it fit.
much quieter again...

I will get my mate to tidy up the welding at weekend (he can weld, I can't).
Then paint it & see how long this one lasts. Smile

As a biker you must also have a stash of parts for bikes that you won't throw away, because they just might be of some use.
MOT tester did have a laugh at the exhaust last year, his apprentice wasn't too chuffed though as he had to hold the emissions probe in with a cloth, because it wouldn't clip onto the end of the can. What a Face

Exhaust again.

Post by rich the mechanic on Mon Mar 15, 2010 9:38 pm

I used to work at a harley dealer and we always had a pile of stock exhausts and my mate hade a 2.3l cortina with a dtm exhaust (now on my escort) and come MOT time we booked it in at a customers car workshop for a test and before we went down we shoved a electra glide silencer on in place of the dtm one and then spiked it so it wasn't quite so restrictive and didn't have a emmission prob as it didn't go near it with the tester probe shame the owner died and no one carried the place on.

Yes it sounds more SPORTY lol! (if you know what I mean).
The van accelerates a lot faster, because the pipe is less restrictive.
I did this as a cheap fix because a new Daihatsu exhaust costs more than our van is worth. Shocked

Exhaust again.

Post by rich the mechanic on Tue Mar 16, 2010 10:02 pm

I like to beat the silly little children off the lights in my car as well as on a bike my car is a 1984 1.6l 5-door escort with a slightly dodgy paint job at the mo, the only outer sign is the big exit on the quite exhaust I put together however the motor is a XR running a weber and a luke warm cam but as a apprentice the shop was involved in drag racing and getting a quick reaction time is where you can win or lose so I usually get to the other side of the lights before they move and then let them pass as soon as I can, But its all good fun Very Happy
