oooo ya sod....again!

Post by leopard_pagan on Fri Apr 19, 2013 6:02 pm

just spotted a leak under the front of the van.. coolant tastes sweetish!
stuck head under the front, there is a metal pipe coming down to a rubber 2?" wide rad hose which looks corroded & where the leaks coming from.
i am very reluctant to drain the system & re-bleed.
pondering on removing the metal hose clip (also looks rusty), twisting the rubber hose where it connects to the metal one to re-bed it/dislodge any crap & fit a new jubilee clip.
meanwhile topped up the coolant bottle & got a bottle of coolant in the van (again).
Temp gauge hasnt moved past half way all week & i dont know how long this has been leaking..

Squeeze the shite hoseclips, all 4 down there, bet they've lost their springyness. My old one leaked from there, new clips and hunky dory.

(buy GOOD hoseclips, not the shite from Aldi's etc)

Genuine jubilee clips are the best you can get.

I'd be tempted to take the bumper off as it only takes minutes and have a close inspection of the radiator.

Jubilee clips can be opened right out and put onto a pipe without disconnecting the hose.

^^^^^^^---^^^^^^

that was the idea + i want to "back to black" the bumpers as rear one off some time this weekend to fit tow bar.
Sadly my adorable most fave nuts n bolts, tools & all cool stuff shop is closed on saturdays!
assuming car shops dont sell shitty cheap jubilee clips.. will get some from there after i measure the pipe diameter properly.

just as well i'm on the bike this weekend. Cool

Might be worth picking up a roll of 2-part amalgamating tape in case the leak is a pin-hole in the metal pipe. My '95 993 developed a 5mm split in one of the pipes (fortunately I have a 'spares' van).

Spring clip broke in half in my hand!
Gets bike out to go buy a new jubilee clip to find a screw in back tyre!
Managed to find a knackered jubilee clip in my shed which held to town n back to get new ones. New now fitted & no leaks. Now I need to get rear off & plugged

Another clip has just failed today.. Lower right rubber pipe in to bottom of radiator.
Just as well I bought 6 jubilee clips the other day & put one in the van as a spare.
I think I will replace all of the spring clips

The other one that goes rubbish is:-

and the one for the bleed nipple.

Fixing that leak has just saved you an expensive repair job!

well the ones i can reach!
plan is.... let the engine cool a bit (just got home)
get the pliers on the spring clips & just pull the clips down the pipes & fit new jubilee... leave the spring clips to rot & fall off coz i am soo not gonna take pipes off to get the clips off! might later on get a hefty pair of cutters & cut them off..

That one clip I photo'd is really what cause my other van to boil up and fudge the head gasket for the second time.

I'd be a bit worried of leaving the clips on the pipes, they may damage the pipes without having something metal inside to support it.
