steering knock - 1st problem ..

Post by minimouse on Tue Apr 23, 2013 8:22 am

thought might as well start my own thread as think I have a few issues starting now ..

In last couple days have heard a knocking sound on drivers side .. first one is occasional almost when just steering to the right .. What should I be looking to check for possible problems.

The 2nd started last night and was a rhythmic knock continously as if something is stuck in the tyre .. but bit louder... any ideas?

Thanks in advance ..

Jack that side up and give the wheel a spin and see if it catches, I have the same problem on mine which is a warped brake disc causing the brake pads to rattle.

Ok, I ended up going to see 2lovely men in kwik fit on the way home.... And after shaking it about a bit they removed the wheels and replaced split pins in the hubs on both sides and tightened centre nuts.... Drivers side was definitely loose...
On taking it off the ramp they still heard a knock... And on climbing under it and looking/feeling and listening while steering locks were put on they can feel ...and hear the knock but not all the time... But can see nothing wrong on inspection...

Where the main steering rod goes under the floor it goes into a rubber boot and they felt it was coming from around that area... But could see no deterioration in the rubber boot etc...so have said they feel it is ok to drive and that I will get used to the noise... (Pretty much)

So has anybody else had a steering issue involving that joint/rubber boot?

First, Thick Fit should be avoided at all costs, they're not mechanics, they're muppets.
Basically from what you say they rumped up the wheelbearings, which probably means one is buggered, if they go it causes the hub to move catching the disc on the caliper. Which will be a knocking sound. The rubber boot as far as I can make out is the steering rack.
If you're not confident take it to a real garage.
There is a centre pivot in the middle with a grease nipple, jack the weight off the wheels a bit and pump some grease into it.

Something rhythmical with speed of the vehicle has to be either:-

Disks or Drums
Wheel bearings
Tyres

Knocking noise is most likely:-

Track rod end
Bottom ball joint
Top strut bearing
Broken Spring

As Logan said, quick fit are just about competent to change tyres. Occasionally they will have a half reasonable engineer in a branch if your lucky.

A good mechanic will pin point the faulty component.

From past failures of putting wheel bearings together wrong myself in my youth, if you drive a vehicle for even just a mile without the bearings properly tightened then the bearing will be knackard.

That nut with the split pin claps the hub to the "cv joint" to the wheel bearing assembly. It must be tightened up to exactly the correct torque setting.

As for the steering knock, if something makes a knock on turning, where the sound comes from can be very misleading. You must watch and inspect each component to find the worn linkage or pivot.

Can't help but think from your oil leak, water leak, and other issues this van is needing some money and time throwing at it. By someone with a good aim!

I have an annoying clunk or rattle which I thought was suspension or spring related. I stripped down the strut and reassembled. Clunk / rattle still there.
Whilst driving down a farm track, still rattling away, I opened the drivers doors to listen to try to locate the noise, it stopped.
It is inside the door!
not fixed it yet but is not serious now.
