HiJet MPV 1.3 EFi LPG

Post by Willst0ne on Sun May 12, 2013 2:28 pm

Hello,
I've bought this vehicle and am looking for help with a number of problems. I should probably list them all separately but I thought I'd try this first....

1. What is normal engine running temperature? The needle sits about two thirds whilst on most journeys. Is this hot, normal or am I just being paranoid it's going to over heat!!!??
2. The cab heaters do not blow warm air. HOWEVER, the window heaters and floor/footwell heaters do? Is this some sort of air block or just some ducting come loose?
3. It shows on the v5 as a light goods vehicle - surely it is a petrol car? Anyone had experience of changing this on their v5?

A thousand thank you's in advance.....

Will Stone

Great thanks Waz. It has side windows and is defiantly an original factory fitted MPV not a conversion. But on the v5 it has it down as a lgv?? I'm guessing this must be some kind of typo??

Just to check, what does your v5c state for these exact sections

D.3 Model =
D.5 Body Type =
[x] Taxation Class =

That is an odd one.

Not that its strange.

Daihatsu dealers were full on shocking when it came to registering Hijets!

If it's got a registration plate after 2001, it may have to stay like that.

I have had the same experience. All my Hi-Jets before 2001 are under 1499cc car tax rate. All the rest beyond cut off date in 2001 are £130 Light Goods.
Its a damn rip-off as my 2003 MPV is smaller than my Fiesta , has lower emissions, runs on LPG and is 50% more efficient in that it carries 6 people and my Fiesta only 4.
I argued back and forth with the DVLA (Drunken Vociferous Loony Alchaholics)
but as you rightly say --- total waste of time.

If a dealer sold a car (e.g. a hijet MPV), in order to register it after 2001 they would have to be a euro compliant, I think its calles euro4 compliant. But the hijet isn't!

The registration of light commercials is way more lax, so they snook them through the dvla's registration process that way.

That is for six months Logi. I have just looked at the tax discs and it is £118 -25 but my pre 2001 Jets are £74- 25. Rarely ever buy a years tax I must admit.
Has anyone thought of writing to Jeremy Clarkson Esq. and see what kind of a Hornets nest he would be prepared to stir up. Right up his street knocking the Establishment I would have thought.

Thank you HJ. I wasnt aware of the reason why there is this ludicrous lunacy over the difference in the tax.

The people I spoke to at the DVLA didnt seem to know the reason either. Very re-assuring ---NOT!!

Its not just emmissions that make them commercial banding. Commercials dont require airbags and other saftey features. My buggy was regd as a commercial for that reason.

Well, I spoke to the DVLA today and they were incredibly helpful. I know this sounds unbelievable, and I had to double check it was the DVLA office I was speaking too. But I was told I should be able to change the body type, fuel type and taxation class by sending in my v5 with the changes, a covering letter and some photos. It seems others have been doing it and therefore a precedence has been set. I will let you know how it goes......

Blimey !!! Well done that man. Next time you speak to them see if you can get their name as that always helps if you can talk to the same person when you call back.

Hello all those interested in this. I thought I'd just call in for an update. I sent off the v5, covering letter, pics etc etc and after an age I received a letter saying they were looking into it.

I was advise to get an emissions test done at a vosa centre and then send this into the dvla I Should get a cheaper road tax bracket.....

To be continued

Well it took 6 months and and they didn't change the taxation on the v5, because of the chassis number. It seems that all MPV Hijets were registered as van/side windows to skirt round particular EU legislation that wouldn't enable them to sell the in the UK. They did however change the fuel type, body style and number of seats so I'll see if that makes a difference to the insurance next time around.

This is correct, they are van derived vehicles, even if they are an MPV.
