155/80R12 tyres on a Hijet - laden and unladen air pressure query...

Post by tara100 on Sun May 19, 2013 9:53 pm

Hi

Does anyone know the recommended air pressures for a laden and unladen Hijet please? Smile

Many thanks!

Well that's what the hand book says about tyre pressures Smile

Front 29psi

Rear 35 psi normal / 54 psi loaded

But I tend to run all 4 at about 33 psi all the time.

Thank you Smile

That's quite a difference on the rear tyres between loaded and unloaded.

As my van is usually carrying quite a bit / medium loaded, I'll go for 29 front, and 44 at the back.

I would be careful, having the rears inflated that high with nothing in the back will make it very light on the back end. Roundabouts in the wet will be quite hairy!! You will also find the tyres wear out a stripe in the middle as they will be bulging...

When you say loaded, how much weight are we talking? 500kg?

As Daihatsu quote 54 'loaded' I thought that going half way between that and 35 'normal' would be a good bet?

I'd say weight wise, the van is always carrying about 250-350kg.

Would 29 / 30 front and 40 psi on the rears be better? Smile

It always amazes me the difference in tyre pressures laden v unladen. The Jet carries near 600 kg load max yet the difference is immense. My truck carries 14 tons and never needs the tyre pressure adjusted ?

I have often wondered why this is the case. After all, the Bedford Rascal is a very similar vehicle but the tyre pressures either remain the same or are increased only slightly like a car for fully laden.

but not with such a difference in pressures I run 30 front and about 40 in the back as we load up but it is not heavy even though the van is full so far the tyres have worn evenly and not been to slippy.

Interesting thought...

I can only think it is down the surface area, the rear tyres on a hijet are very small for 700kg or whatever the max load weight is.

Being so narrow, and small they carry their weight on a small area of about 4" by 4", and the side walls are very tall.

I have loaded my old van up till the tyres were really squidged out the sides like a flat tyre, that had to be about 1000kg, maybe a fair bit more Embarassed

And the tyres got very very hot in about 2 miles, more air in the would have made a world of difference, so would have doing 2 trips.

But how that differs from a bedford rascal is beyond me!

p.s. The thoughts of driving an empty hijet with 54 psi in the rear tyres sounds quite fun!! I might have to give it a blast.

I tend to inflate all the tires to 2.4bar.
When working for events or wood collection, I rise up the rear pressure to 3.5.
