Another odd change to the V5c - love the DVLA?!

Post by HighlyJetted on Thu Aug 15, 2013 11:36 am

Wheres the tick box for scrapped gone?!

Another disappearing act!

Turns out you can't actually scrap a vehicle yourself anymore.

So if you have a bike in your garage, and you take loads of bits off it to use on another bike, then you cut the bike up because its to big for your boot, and take the separate pieces to the tip or scrap yard or put it in your wheelie bin then the bike no longer exists.

But you can't actually get rid of the V5c!

On the back of the V5c it says:-

DVLA wrote:*Scrapping the vehicle

You cannot use the V5C to tell us you have scrapped your vehicle.
You should take the vehicle to an authorised treatment facility (ATF) and they should issue a certificate of destruction (CoD). If you do not receive a CoD immediately please fill in section 9 of the V5C and send it to DVLA.
If you have broken up the vehicle yourself, you must either tax it or tell us you are keeping it off the public road by making a SORN, until you take it to an ATF or tell us you no longer have it.
So i'm supposed to tax it?! or just lie and say its off the road.

I feel the dvla are doing themselves proud again, got to love their bureaucracy.

Unfortunately, the vehicles I need to scrap have already been cut up and weighed in a while back.

I'm going to see someone who does this and see if he will just issue me a COD.

Why not just write to them and say that you no longer have it?

I think they are confused and misleading you, especially if they are wittering about the new owner of the vehicle as that is not mentioned on the V5 instructions at all.

If you check the Direct.gov website it tells you to do exactly what I said:

If you’ve broken up the vehicle yourself

If you’ve broken up the vehicle yourself you must make a SORN (Statutory Off Road Notification) or continue to tax the vehicle.

You’ll have to make a SORN every year until you’ve taken it to an ATF or told DVLA you no longer have it.

Tell DVLA by completing section 3 of your V5C vehicle registration certificate (the ‘Notification of sale or transfer’ section), or write a letter to DVLA using the address below, explaining that you no longer have the vehicle.

Contact DVLA

DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BD

So it looks as though the telephone jockey at the other end didn't know either.

Anyway you can't lose by trying it. Send the V5 and a covering letter. You will get a reply in about 4 weeks either accepting the situation or you will get a refusal and a replacement V5.

If they refuse all you have to do is SORN the vehicle once because haven't the government changed the system so that the vehicle will remain on SORN until you say otherwise? (In this case you never will!).

haha, i had a motorbike stolen and was told by the police that i had to contact DVLA to inform them so they could update the records... they were not interested, said it was nothing to do with them and they dont register vehicles as stolen,
so i asked if someone trys to get new documents saying they just bought it and still haven't received the paper work will they just send it out to them? yes, apparently they will!!

Err nope you get a reminder once a year which you then have to redeclare your vehicle as SORN and every year there after.

Yep, pre Jan 1st 1973, moves to pre Jan 1st 1974. '74 cars aren't tax exempt.
