Elwood's Guinea Pig Mexican Sunset Bus.

Post by ElwoodLivesey on Wed Oct 16, 2013 10:10 pm

Hello everybody, I thought I'd start a topic instead of just filling up the intro section. I'm about to start doing up my 1999 1.3 efi MPV that I bought from a crook starting with Head Gasket, Skim, Water Pump, Timing Belt, Full Service next week. I'm really going to try and take pictures, I've got a habit of doing up old vehicles and not taking a single picture, but I got a smartphone last week so I've got no more excuses.

Thanks Logi, I think I will. Here's a question to start with, where can I get the bottom radiator pipe from? I can get the hose, but the pipe looks even less healthy. Thanks.

The metal one?

There are no copy parts available to replace it.

Very common item to rust and cause leaks.

Second hand, or dare I say main dealer?

Would making a pipe from plumbing copper cause any electrolytic problems?

Don't think it would really be a problem.

I have used bits of copper and elbo's on other vehicles, namely bloody Land rovers!

I think I'll be plumbing it, aren't rads made out of copper anyway? I haven't looked properly but I think I'll cut back the old pipe as far as I can up out of the way of the road and just put a little bit of rubber hose to some copper. Don't get me started on Land Rovers, I used to love them until I had a couple of winters under an SIII, never again.

Hello everyone, I tested the cooling system and found the thermostat housing has a hairline crack, although it hasn't overheated since I k-sealed and fitted new rad caps and I've done about 100 miles. I can't find a new housing, is there a nice cheap place to look? I texted a bloke from Guernsey who's breaking a few just waiting for a response. In the meantime I flushed the whole system and cleaned out the bottle etc. it looks quite respectable in there.

I sold my last thermostat housing to a guy who was desperate for one.

It was actually my own special reserve one for my engine build on my project van Crying or Very sad

Same here.  I sold my last one to Daniel Timothy to get him out of a fix.
Trouble is when you do these favours for people--- you always end up needing one yourself.
I am just not doing that any more.
Give me a call Elwood if you want a pipe. 07970 391876. Woody.

Just a little point Elwood. Radiator's these days tend to be made of Aluminium with plastic headers top and bottom with a rubber gasket
and then crimped together.
Now when I was a sprog they were made of soldered brass mostly-- but in
Logi's day only Methuselah would remember that and he lived for 969 years and was grandfather of Noah  (of the Ark fame which was 4000 years ago ) and Logi claims to have known him.lol!

Thanks for the replies everyone, and I know the feeling, hence my shed full of various useless and probably perished cortina and capri bushes. Woody I remember brass now, I remember shiny aluminium ones being for my mates suped up xr2. I didn't really think about it becoming the norm, but thinking about now, oh yeah, they are definitely lighter but that's a bit naff having a perishable gasket. I think I've sourced a pipe now though thanks, I'll be in touch if it doesn't pan out.

I've Araldited the housing, I don't know if it will hold with the heat and pressure now it's been manhandled but we'll have to wait and see I suppose.

Well... Araldite & manhandling the housing have made it worse, starts to overheat within a couple of miles now. Annoying. At least I can see that it's definitely coming out of there now rather than just moistening up.

Looks like I'm scuppered before I've even started, £124.84 + VAT for a new thermostat housing. I can't afford that. This is a real shame, I really love this little bus I'd seen quite a few of them about so I never realised how scarce parts would be.

Hello everyone, and thanks to HJ for the thermostat housing, all fitted and not overheating at the moment and I thrashed it for about 5 miles, the coolant is also right up to the bottom of the rad cap under the seat, which is nice. However, the temp is sitting right of centre, maybe at nearly 3/4 and the fan doesn't kick in, it doesn't kick in when the contacts are joined on the bottom plug but it does when I hook it straight to the battery. Is this a failed switch? Thanks.

P.S I checked and swapped the fuse just to be sure but it wasn't burned out.

Look under the passenger seat where the wires come out the switch, they go to a wee relay. Check the wiring here(check it clicks when you bridge out the temp switch), mine was rotten in the multiplug.

Ok, so it's too windy to hear a discernible click from the relay, is it definitely the one in a rubber sleeve just next to the filler cap under the seat Logi?

Mine doesn't look in bad condition but it could well be.

Does anyone know what the relay is called and do they sell them in Halfrauds? I'd like to be confident it's not going to overheat before I drive to work tomorrow. Thanks.

Confused Question

ElwoodLivesey wrote:Oh ok, that's a shame, mine looks very good, when I jump across the terminals in the plug the fan comes on.
But earlier you said:-

ElwoodLivesey wrote:it doesn't kick in when the contacts are joined on the bottom plug but it does when I hook it straight to the battery.
But anyway... .if you bridge the fan switch connector and the fan kicks in then the fan, relay and wiring all works.......

So next question is:- Does the bottom water pipe that the fan switch is in actually get hot?????
