Radiator fan over ride switch

Post by leopard_pagan on Sat Jun 26, 2010 7:15 pm

i know most people have this on their Hijets.

id like to do the same, i got a new rad fan switch and want that switch to still do its job.
i'd like to fit a dash switch as a fail safe.
looked at the diagrams that i was given a while back, hand drawn (badly) and dont make much sense.

anyone done this recently who can offer some info/tips?

has your dash switch got a light?

if not, its very simple.

Find the 2 wires that leave the rad switch.
splice 2 wires into them (either strip the coating and solder, cut them and fit spade connectors with piggyback connectors, or if you must, use scotch locks)
run the 2 wires to your dash switch.

and thats basically it...

a dash switch with a light is a little different.

basically you find the rad switch, and then work out which wire runs from the fan to the switch and splice into that wire.
run the wire to one side of your switch and then the other side you will need to earth somewhere.
some switches have a seperate light connector. you will have to work out how to connect it (normally come with a paper diagram or markings on the switch itself)

hope you can understand that...

the switch I fitted has a light in it, I connected it to the 2 wires at the switch (first method)
the light doesnt come on when I flick the switch.
it actually turns off...the nice thing is, if I dont flick it on, I can tell when the rad switch activates Razz

mind you, my fan kicks in around 1/2 up the temp gauge :S

at the moment my fan is hot wired to come on as soon as ignition does.
1st method sounds easy. just got to route the wiring thru....
i'll solder and use glued heatshrink to do mine, which means i'll borrow some from work + a heat gun.

it does have a small red led which i would like wired in so i know if its on or not. but i can figure that out later.

mine is routed along underneath to near the steering shaft through the floor.

there is a small hole on mine between the brake pedal mounting and the front panel.

its routed into the cab through that hole and then run behind the carpet, up the side behind a couple of brackets and then up into the dash.

I hope that makes sense :S

the first method is easier, as you dont have to find an earth...

as I said though, my switch's light is on when the fan isnt running.

then when the fan is on, either by me flicking the switch or the rad switch working, the light goes out...

I like is as its very noticable, so it reminds me to flick it on if needed, or if the rad switch failed etc...

I did much the same except I have a relay fitted just behind the rad and its connected by spade terminals in a way that if it all fails I can pull the plugs apart and hot wire directly so on all the time as a back up.

mine is all connected via spade connectors...

if both of the switches failed (dash and rad) I could undo a bit of insulation tape and then connect the wires together to hotwire my fan Smile
