can't get it into reverse

Post by johnnyboy666 on Sat Jan 11, 2014 10:35 pm

My new hijet pickup is very sloppy when trying to change gear. It took me a good few miles before I could find fourth and have yet to get it into reverse.
I'm assuming reverse is below fifth? It feels as if there's nothing there.
most of the gears are quite stiff to get into also.

Is this a common problem?

Sounds like a adjustment of cables is needed start with the clutch and then move on to the gear selectors I think Highlyjetted might have written something up or it is a read of the manual not done that myself.

Yeah I'll have to have a read of the manual, I assume the reverse doesnt have its own separate cable?

I have a feeling the gearstick surround has been messed about with, as most of the interior is either loose, half attached or missing!

There is no separate reverse cable.

See if you can put it in gear by changing gear via the selector arms that stick out of the gearbox which the cables actuate.

Does seem funny this though, some dude rang me a week ago for a Hijet diesel gearbox because it wouldn't go in gear, maybe he realised he couldn't find a box for it so flogged it to the next guy.

Might just be the cables though, try to put it into gear via the selector leavers on the box, get an assistant to move the gear stick while you encourage it from underneath at the box.

I'll try that later, It definitely seems to go into gear fine except reverse, it just feels like a bit of a 'stirring a bowl of porridge' to get it in.
To liken it to my other car, on the peugeot there is a 'L' shaped bracket that the gear linkages attach to, and if the one bolt that holds that in comes slightly loose, it gives the same effect

Update on this, had a quick look and it appears there is about an inch of travel front-back and left-right at the base of the lever mechanism.
I was going to take it off and see whats what but I couldnt quite figure out how to detach it? there's four nuts around it which i undid, but there must be something else holding it in place as it wouldnt come free, any suggestions?

If I were to hazard a guess, Id say there was probably a plastic bushing in this mechanism that could do with replacing, that and its pretty rusty, so could probably do with a good grease up.

Try the center panel bolts, I haven't had the gear stick out but I think the panel one are part of the stick assembly.

By centre panel do you mean the panel between the drivers and passenger seat? If do does the whole thing come off?

update on this, took the middle panel off (yes the seat belt stalks hold it on in a pickup too)
then the fun began. four bolts came out easily, and you could wiggle it a bit but not much, pulled back a bit of the horrendously glued on carpet (previous owners handywork) and found two little plastic bungs, near the drivers seat, so popped them out to see what was under there.

Not a lot, I assume they are there for cable adjustment, but I'll be buggered if anybody with human sized hands could get more than half a finger in there.

Pulled more carpet back and found two bolts, near where the drivers left leg would be, which also hold in the gear assembly. So took those out.

I thought then it would be a simple case of lift the assembly out, and disconnect the cables.

How wrong I was!! theres not enough slack in the cables to lift the assembly out first, so you need to do a reverse somersault inverted headflip with a half twist, and break all your fingers to get in and pull out the *****ing little metal retaining clips to get the cables out.

Anyway, I got it all out, and i can see why its got so much slack in it. the whole thing is a very cheap nasty, badly designed piece of cack, with more play in it than a well used deck of cards, 90% iron oxide and theres no way I'm putting that back in.

Instead I will be re-running the cable over the engine, alongside the handbrake cable, plating up the hole and using a gear mechanism I liberated off a rascal van at the scrappy at the weekend, cost me a shiny £5er

It'll have to be bolted on the top of where the gear lever is now, but its a much more compact unit so I think it'll be alright

Have you actually had it in gear though, to make sure the selector forks work?

Yep seems to select all gears fine when done manually at the box.

Little update, I spent at least half a can of 3-in-1 oil down both cables to get them running smoothly again, they were severely crudded up and rusty inside, now they're smooth as smooth thing.

Another thing that probably wasn't helping the situation, is the metal retaining clips that hold the outer cable to the mount near the gearbox were both missing, so there was about 3mm of play on each cable there!
If anybody has a few spare they want rid of, I'm your man!

Another update on this (if anybody is interested) with some pics!!

here's the main 'mechanism' bit of the gearstick assembly, removed from the mounting, and with the gearstick itself taken off.
in the centre you can see where I've taken out one of the plastic bushes already.

And below you can see the difference between the deformed plastic bush coming out, and the phosphor bronze replacement.
(for reference, the reason I'm using these, is because they are a nice tight fitting bush and are oil impregnated, which means self lubricating, basically perfect for this type of application IMO)

and below you can see them all fitted. they have absolutely eliminated any play! a very smooth postive feel the the motion now. Even better than I had expected!

Now its just this other little bit that I need to get bushes for, but bronze ones arent common in this size so i'm just looking into some replacement nylon ones which should suffice I think

you can see how knackered they are!

I think when all this is put back in, and back together with my newly uber-lubed gear cables, the thing should be a pleasure to drive!!

When I've sourced some bushes for this last little bit, i'll probably offer up these kits for sale for anybody who wants to sort their sloppy gear change out

That wouldn't surprise me!
I think this little fix should outlast the rest of the vehicle now!
Got some replacement retaining clips for both ends of the cables on the way to me too now as some were missing. So should be good as new Smile

Awesome little modification Smile

How much do you reckon these kits will cost?

I'm having a bit of trouble with my gear selection so wouldn't mind giving it a total overhaul Smile

Depends if you want to replace the '5th hole' bush as well, as I'm still on the hunt for those. (Bottom two pics)
But without that I'd say £17 posted?

Have you got a drawing with sizes on there are a few of us with lathes and I have a little bit of bronze and may be able to lay my hands on a little more although we don't use bronze bushes at work anymore.
