lowering by flipping axle?

Post by johnnyboy666 on Sun Jan 12, 2014 11:23 am

I've read a few mentions of flipping the axle to an axle over leaf setup to drop the rear a bit, but I can't seem to find anybody that has actually done it. Has anybody done it and do they have any tips?
I have a few questions:
Would you just keep the axle the same orientation? If so what do you do about any leaf spring locating tabs as they'll end up on the wrong side?
And if you flip the axle upside down to counteract this, the diff drain plug would be upside down and so would the brakes? (and be going the wrong direction!)

any tips?

Also, if you spin a diff round, it would make the wheels spin the wrong way.

I don't know anyone thats doing it. But its doable.

It will lower it ALOT!! Could you drop the front the same is the question.

I looked at this option and there are people who have done it to Rascals but when I was underneath my MPV last weekend I concluded that you'd have to raise the front floor to accommodate the drop up front. There just isn't the clearance.

I think rascals have the axle on top as standard don't they?
to address the front issue, I envisage a coilover conversion and a lower profile tyre perhaps.

Has anybody done a 4 bar coilover conversion on the rear one of these before I wonder?
Would probably involve notching the chassis rail too I expect

If you've got a pick up I think from memory theres enough space to flip the axle. If you've got a van theres nowhere near enough so you'd have to notch the chassis.
The axle stays the same way up but just moves above the leaf, you need to grind off the mounting plates and weld them on the other side of the axle. You can get kits for vw caddys which don't require welding that you could possible make fit.

I'm starting to think there's a reason nobody does this, I might just start by getting the leaf spring eyes reversed and see where that gets me

Am I missing something, or is there a point to this?

to lower the rear, as its very high, the thing feels like it might topple over at any moment!

Or have a look at my pic when I lowered mine using aggregates, no need for any fancy suspension mods. Wink

hahaha, that made me actually chuckle out loud!!

Less labour, adjustable ride height, fits almost instantly, and just £35.

Go to your nearest builders merchant and pick up your bag of MOT today!
