FRC74 is the sprung cap (under passenger seat) - not sure if we know an aftermarket cap without spring - description on that one sounds good though pic seems to show a spring but could be a generic pic.

It's not the cap under the seat I'm after is the filler cap on the Rad, without the spring. The spring caps don't work on the rad.

The spring caps are easy to obtain from any parts shop. Loads on ebay.

Last one I got, which was last year cost me £4  Smile

Thanks anyway

 Question  Really?

Special valveless radiator cap (non vented).
Designed for use on vehicles where a radiator or expansion or header tank cap is required which has no opening pressure valve.

Hi don't understand your reply Smile

There's 2 caps. One under seat which has the spring, and one on the rad doesn't. Its the one on the rad I want. Go to a Daihatsu dealer and they say they have to order from Japan. No motor spares shop have them.

You can put a normal one on either a 1.3 or a 993.

on the 993, there is no side vent, so it will make no difference.

on a 1.3, they have a standard sprung radiator cap fitted as standard.

This non-expansion cap / expansion cap has been debated about 3 times on here I think, and I have looked up the part numbers on the Diahatsu parts diagrams and they actually supplied the sprung pressure cap always for the 1.3cc, and some of the time for the 993cc.

I like these ones which you can buy at any Unipart motorfactors for about £5

The cap i linked to is not sprung, hence the? As neither is the one on the rad. The underseat one is sprung, i know that so why would i link to a sprung one?
I dont know if it fits size wise though.

And i disagree with HJ, i reckon you'll lose coolant with a sprung one on the rad. Unless you can find one with a higher opening pressure?

Oops! Sorry about that.  Embarassed
Looking at the pic! it looked liked the spring one. I also should learn to read the ad properly  Very Happy

I also agree with you that the spring cap doesn't work on the rad. I have 3 and every one leaks water. The cap I have now is not pressurised. It just has a knackered seal.
I will check out the one you linked

Nah matey, I'd need to get up earlier to catch you out. Wink
Seriois post, had an 0.9 one on the rad, it pissed over. Put the non sprung one on, no more probs. Dunno if its to do with the rad being higher, but it always overflowed from the top one.

Mine is a sprung cap on the rad and never had any problems and I recently replaced for the above pictured first line one when I overhalled the coolant system and still no problems

I have put at least 5 sprung caps on 1300 radiators, I lose count, maybe 10.

All caps are not equal, many are totally thin chinese junk and they do not pull down properly.

The 993cc will work with a sprung cap on the rad as there is no overflow pipe from it I had one on ours no probs as for the 1.3 I think there is at least two different rads the later one is a diesel based unit the earlier is a 993 based one.

However if the metal part of your old cap is okay then I think the rubber seals are the same try to remove one from one of the spares and offer it up on ours I took the rubber off the cap under the seat and flipped it over as a temperary add a bit more load on the seal while I waited for the replacement to arrive.

All the 1.3 rads I have taken off are pretty much identical, I have about 6 or 7 in storage and they are all the same.

Hi. Advice please.
Your saying he spring one should work on the rad. In that case I may have bought cheap rubbish ones. So which make is the best ?
I've tried to get the seal off an old one but it looks like it's fixed in.
Suggestions please!

For goodness sake what is all this crap about sprung and non sprung caps. Listen and learn at what HJ and Rich are telling you. The 1300 has TWO sprung caps. The Radcaps have TWO rubber seals on them so as Rich says you can use it on the radiator on the 993 even though it doesnt have the bleed off pipe and the 1300 needs the second seal to stop the water from the heater matrix being lost as LOGI so eloquently put.

I have found some 993's with the plain cap still on from factory fittment as they don't have the matrix pipe on the rad neck but hardly ever find one now --- they are nearly always sprung ones.

I did have a 993 come in with " the head gaskets gone my garage says" because the garage put the plain cap down on the engine so within seconds it was pushing all the water out through the expansion tank. Doh!!!!!

The crap is mate mine is a 993, not a 1300. And I've tried 4 new spring caps and every one leaked. I got the one HJ suggested new yesterday, Guess what? It leaked! Any more suggestions  Mr Know it all  Rolling Eyes Laughing
