The thermostat should come with a grooved rubber o-ring which seals the housing to the block and holds the thermostat in place. At least my replacement did.

the litle pin was at the wrong position.

number 2-- thermostat housing leaked.

doesnt there need to be a gaskett or something between the housing and the engine?
there was nothing there...plastic on metal.

yes it did,are you talking about this ring?

but i meant the plastic thermostathousing.
does there need to be a gaskett or something between the housing and the engine?

like on this picture

i did a pressure test without the thermostat but with the housing on and it leaked on several points between the housing and the engine.

and another question.. on my altenator theres a sticker that says S12 i thought i saw a picture here somewhere
from somebody else and that had a sticker with a different number.
i cant seem to find that picture again but i was sure it didnt say S12 like mine..

There is no flange gasket, the seal is the rubber on the thermostat itself.

But I use some RTV silicon sealant when I put them on, and I let it cure for an hour or two before I put coolant in there.

I also clean up the faces as good as possible.

its not that i dont believe you but i think thats realy funny because i thought i should buy
the gates one because it was kind of expensive for a thermostat and a well known brand Neutral Evil or Very Mad

http://www.mijnautoonderdelen.nl/daihatsu/hijet/65971/65977/thermostaat

Looking at that, it would seem that I am telling you to buy the cheapest one on the list!!!

Here in the UK, I can get a circoli one or other no-name thermostat for about £4 - but they are rubbish.

I love the nipparts ones, because they have not caused me any problems - yet! And they are half the price of a blueprint thermostat.

What I can say, is I think Gates Hijet fan belts are rubbish, the V profile and notches on the belt don't grip the pulleys very well.

I put a link to a picture, which I think showed the alternator, under 'air filter query' in the Workshop section. I seem to remember it was labelled S12 but I can't check as the computer I am using is blocking pictures

That's probably about right.

I had a fan belt fail once which was replaced by a garage. The replacement then failed. Turned out it was a Gates one.

That was replaced by a Halfords one which, as far as I know , is still on the vehicle.

Presumably Gates is the type supplied through the motor factors that garages use.

Be very wary of Eurocarparts, you think your buying a 'brand-name' quality product....but you'll often find a lesser quality and cheaper 'pattern-part' when you open the packaging......but you still pay for the 'brand-named' quality product.

Nice!!!
His trxx does not have the JBDET in it though. It has the 3 cylinder EF series engine instead.

But very nice find, I will post it on the kei forums.

finished working on the coolingsystem today.
-replaced all hoseclips for decent ones
-replaced radcaps
-done pressuretest coolingsystem without thermostat
-fixed leaking thermostathousing
-tested thermostat and put it back in the correct spot, thermostat was new
-refil coolant the correct way and bleed the air the correct way.

in hindsight i didnt bleed the system correctly when i did the previous work on the engine.
and i didnt put the thermostat in the correct place.
and had a few leaks in the system and an old crappy radcap.

it runs good now  cheers
thermostat opens, al hoses get hot , fan kicks in .
no leaks anymore no airgap under the radcap under the seat.
the coolant stays on the same level in the tank.

drove it about for quit some time,
then let it run for 10 minutes in the parking spot.. nothing happened.

if it stays like this for a couple of days i think its fixed    cheers

thanx guys for the help and info on here
i realy appreciate it

After you heat cycle it 5 or 6 times - e.g. fully cold, to fully hot, back to fully cold.

You will notice the coolant level in the heater tank bottle settles to an exact point.

Draw a line with pencil on the fluid level, then keep an eye on it for a few months. Check it sits on the line when fully cold before you set off in the morning.

yes i am.
i am looking at a nissan vanette diesel and mitsubishi l400 for converting in to a camper.
a bit more comfort and space and i would like to drive diesel again.

i know its not the most logical course of action
to spend that much amount of time and money on it and then sell it
but i had a change of heart and some extra money.
so the time has come for the litle van to go to a new owner.

The Vanette was my first choise but I didn't want a diesel because of the extremely higher road taxes for privately owned.
