rear brake shoe adjustment?

Post by johnnyboy666 on Tue Feb 25, 2014 3:34 pm

Whilst fitting a replacement handbrake cable, I think I have adjusted the rear drum by mistake so the shoes are pushing against the drum without the brakes or handbrake applied. So the brake is effectively stuck on.
Is there a way to adjust the brake? Or would a few presses on the brake pedal adjust itself back to normal?

The rear brake shoes are self adjusting. If you have managed to over adjust them, they can be released by removing an oval rubber plug from the backplate and releasing the toothed cams with a screwdriver. The shoes can then be adjusted by applying the handbrake a few times.
I am not sure it is possible to over adjust in the first place, perhaps the cable is too tight.

Can that be done without removing the drum? (I hope so, cos it was a ballache to get off the first time!)
The cable definitely isnt too tight, because its not attached at the other end yet.

I think what happened is when I had the drum off and was faffing about getting the old cable out of its little hook/lever thingy, and getting the new one in its place, i must've adjusted it to the point where the drum just about still went on but was quite tight on the shoes, so need to slack it back off

Did you take the lip off the drum before you put it back on?

Yes the hole is in the back plate behind the forward most shoe.
The hole is there to get the drum off if it has worn a lip.

Surprisingly there wasn't a lip on the drum, so they must not be the original ones. This is good news, I'll have a go at that if I ever have any spare time to myself. Roll on longer days I say!

Drums are piss easy to get off, there are two threaded holes you run bolts into which pop the drum off the face. Maybe you've either put them together wrong, or you didn't release the adjusters before you rebuilt it.
Drums and shoes barely do any work on a hijet so they tend to show no wear, unless it's had been used to carry heavy loads.

The holes on this drum have kindly had the thread stripped and then painted by the previous owner
I must not have released the adjusters then. This is where a haynes manual would save a lot of time!

Have you looked at the workshop manuals on this site?

Yeah, they aren't particularly forthcoming with information, compared to Haynes ones.

There is more information in the proper manuals, but it's not laid out in the "idiots guide" type of way the haynes books do.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that!

I agree with HJ I have found haynes manuels with the pictures for completely the wrong engine type shown it was only out by 20 years they are great if you know nothing where as the manufacturers manuls have ALL the info but are based on you working for them/their dealers and have a good working knowledge of the make.

Oh yeah, they don't call the haynes manuals 'the book of lies' for nothing! But the hijet pdfs seem to be 'here's an exploded diagram'.
I'm sure it won't take too long for me to get acquainted with these vans but compared to my bike or my car, the info available is sparse

job jobbed, it was quite handy that I had the take the drum off the drivers side anyway to fit the other handbrake cable, so I could see where this little ratchety jobby was. still couldnt quite get the screwdriver at the right angle on the passenger side to get it, so pulled the drum back off, gave it a tweak and away we go.

As said above, it's easy when you know!
