Fan Belt... agian!

Post by leopard_pagan on Thu Mar 06, 2014 8:03 am

2 belts in 12 months.... 1st one covered the engine in rubber dust, screeched so it got changed; the belt i fitted around xmas time started to screech & i tightened it & all was OK......
This morning on my way to work the belt i fitted disintegrated at 60mph, the temp gauge was just off max, battery, brake & engine management lights came on & i managed to pull in to a layby fairly straight away.
I didnt know what the cause was at the time.
temp gauge is where i started.. checked fluid levels which were all ok, no gurgling when i switched off. but as i was checking the levels i found a shred of fan belt!.. lifted the drivers seat up  Suspect

What he said ^^^^

Bottom crank pulleys are prone to be bent where people have abused them getting them off.

Make sure the water pump and alternator are not tight to rotate.

Check for any defects in the pulleys belt groves.

If in doubt change both the water pump pulley, the crank pulley and put another alternator on.

I have both pulley spare you can have, but I do not have an alternator - "ask woody!"

Might just be a duff belt.

I had something similar where the original belt failed then the replacement. The next belt was ok and is still there some years later. (I can't remember where the last one came from but I think it was Halfords).

All you can do is make sure the pulleys are clean and that it is properly tensioned.

New belt on, van seems ok/normal. I did pull over & stop as soon as the dash lights came on.

I checked the pulleys again before fitting new belt, still can't feel any play, pulleys look ok.
I will take the van to the place that did the Mot last week & let them have a look. Fresh eyes n all that.

Keep a spare belt (or maybe an old pair of tights???) in the van and that should get you home safely!
