ADMIN PLEASE DELETE!

Post by 993cc on Wed Apr 16, 2014 3:07 am

Hi. I have an '89 Hijet van, engine has blown head gasket. I have a rebuilt g11 turbo Charade engine I'd like to put in it. I've heard of this conversion being done but I can't seem to find any infomation on it. As both engines are cb series, I thought it might be fairly do-able. I was interested if anyone here knows anyone who has done it. I can see fitting the turbo engine in with the carby top hat will present some clearance issues & was wondering if I might be able to come up with some sort of solution to make it fit. Raising the seats has been suggested.
Any information about this converion would be greatly appreciated! Cheers.

the idea is verry nice
but if its realistic i dont know.

there are a lot of things beside if it wil fit.
-cooling
-wil it fit the gearbox
-what ecu
-etc etc

i dont know if he knows but you could ask nathan munns from the gtti facebook page.
its not a cb80 but they know about other engines (cb60) to.

I am an ex daiharder, and played with turbo charades along time ago.

Your problems are due to the lean over installation in the hijet, the turbo inlet and exhaust manifolds won't fit, so you would have to use the hijets CB41 manifolds, but then your turbo won't fit along with the throttle body or carb etc.

It is doable but its not a bolt together conversion, your going to have to do some cutting and shutting on the hardware.

I think a hijet gearbox might fit a CB60 if you swap the flywheel and clutch over.

Then you will have to do some wiring bodgery.

Thanks! I was thinking swapping parts from the CB41 may be involved.
Hmmm... I was hoping this conversion might not require too much fabrication work or modifications, it's staring to sound like it could become a major exercise.
I might look into what I can do with the CB41 in terms of rebuilding it and getting more out of it.
If the CB60 swap is going to open a big can of worms, I rather go down my preferred path of a non-turbo 12a conversion.

Either way, the cb60 is pretty poo.

The worthy Daiharder engine is the CB70/CB80 - but they are rare nowadays.

Between me and a mate we scrapped about 10.

Tuning the CB41 is a total waste of money, you won't get results.

Really the 1.3 hijet is f**kloads faster than a 993cc. I've drove a 993cc a couple of times this week and they really do suck balls. And with a few small tweaks I'm sure there is more power waiting for to be released from the 1.3.

Rotaries are a nice idea, but owning one is a serious expense! Your buying something second hand for quite a bit of cash which that needs rebuiling which takes a fair bit of cash - then you put fuel and oil in the bastard every week and thats a fair bit more cash. The conversion to put it in a hijet would be quite fabrication intense.

The most cost effective thing to do for more power, is sell the 993cc and buy a 1.3 Wink and then it works properly without bodge issues.

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it! Very Happy
I was thinking rotary as I have a rebuilt (carby) 12a in the shed. If I had to find one & get it rebuilt I wouldn't even consider it. I've had a few rotaries and I love them but you are right - it would probably begin to turn into a serious money pit...
The thought of the 1.3 conversion had crossed my mind. I think I'll take your advice and look into with it, sounds like the most sensible option and the most practical & reliable engine to put in.

But when you price up a conversion parts plus the labour, you realise you either buy a whole van for the parts, or you just buy a whole van to use.

Yeah, I can see what you're saying... After a little bit of research I now know the HC-E is the engine to get. Already I can see the potential you were talking about! Cool  Should have looked into it before...
I'm not sure if 1.3 Hijets ever came here to Australia but I still see quite a few G102 Charades getting around.
Hopefully I can find a decent engine from a Charade and get the parts to convert it to the lean over position. Not sure what gearbox I'd need or if the CB41 box would fit... ?

Don't forget once you have a 1300 hijet the 1600 swap is quite straight forward (by the sounds of it) :-)

That would be awesome. Having a 1.6 in one must be pretty mental! Really want to do the 1.3 conversion now, looking into it...
