brake problems (new member)

Post by tipper-truck on Thu Apr 24, 2014 11:35 am

Hi,
I brought a 1994 993 hijet a couple of weeks ago, for a bargain price, and am really enjoying owning it, have had to replace a wheel bearing but apart from that it has been great. However yesterday when driving the breaks suddenly became much less effective, I can bring the van to a pretty speedy stop but I really have to press hard! Normal breaking for town driving has become a little unnerving as the pedal is pretty ineffective until I really push hard.
I have had a quick check for leeks and can’t see any, although a more thorough inspection may be required, but it just seemed strange that the problem would occur so quickly and I was wandering if I am missing something? Could it be the servo?
Thanks sam

Welcome to the forum Smile

Have you checked the vaccuum pipes to the servo?

Look for the rubber hose which attaches to the servo, follow this its full length looking for any leaks whilst the engine is running. Also it is possible the hose has collapsed on itself which is sometimes impossible to see from the outside. In fact for the price of the hose I would be tempted to change it just to eliminate it.

Also keep an eye on your brake fluid level in case you do have a leak.

sounds like servo to me,
the way to check it is with engine off
pump pedal till its hard and hold it down hard as you can
start engine
if the servo is ok the pedal will sink
if it stays solid the servo is duff or there is no vacum to it
