Cream cheese in oil cap !!!

Post by retro on Wed Jun 25, 2014 1:04 pm

Viewed a hijet today, everything looked good , took the cap off to check coolant reserve, was fine but only water, checked the other cap ( going in to the engine ) and could see no water / coolant ! then checked oil and there was a bit of cream cheese around the cap and inside. It did not over heat idling and owner said it had never overheated. she also said that it has been stood for 2 months ! if that why there is cream cheese ? or has the head gone ? also said that she had stalled it a few times and found it hard to start again after stalling it but starts fine cold !

Any advice would be great :-)

Mayo under the cap MIGHT just be condensation from the rocker cover. Was there any mayo on the dip stick?

Most likely hg failure, mine had similar symptoms, no stalling tho. But mine had been used for half a mile a day for 12 years. Clened it out and flushed the engine and haven't had a problem since.
But my money is on hg Sad

They all get mayo under the oil filler cap, due to it is the highest point in the oil system where the water condensation collects.

But if the coolant is just water and it won't idle, I say say pretty confidently it has some kind of coolant system issue.

checked the other cap ( going in to the engine ) and could see no water / coolant

But this is the biggest scream of coolant issues.

mayo under the cap can come from often driving litle distances

but it can also be the dreaded headgasket.
if its for sale maybe thats the reason they are selling it...

if you realy want to buy it you could let a garage check the headgasket

I know the coolant system gets problems on these vans , other ways to check it ? bubbling up reserve tank ?

Reason for sale is they just dont use it ! is the gasket a major prob on these ? i know if the heads been warped its gonna cost alot. just trying to prepair myself for what it may cost !

Although everyone will tell you mayo under an oil cap on a car is a sign of head gasket issues - this is really a myth nowadays.

Back in the older era of motoring the gasket would leak water to oil ways. etc.

Nowadays head gaskets only tend to fail between the water and the combustion chamber.

This causes combustion gases to end up in the coolant system.

So normally, if you thrash the pants of the vehicle - up hills is best - a head gasket failure vehicle will displace water into the header tank. Well as long as the coolant system was properly filled with water!! If there isn't enough water in the coolant system to start with then it cannot displace it.  Wink

As for your warp comment, pretty much every time you remove an alloy cylinder head it will be warped, so thus they need skimming every time. If you don't believe me watch one getting skimmed, they warp in very funny ways that you would never expect.

Checking for a hijet head gasket failure will confuse most garages, because typically they use block test fluid kits, or a gas sniffer. But these do not work on a hijet!!! I know I have tried them multiple times.
