made roof rails

Post by Ryan 95 on Tue Aug 19, 2014 9:23 pm

had a set of OEM rails from a Peugeot 406 estate and wondered if they'd fit....they didn't, so hammered one of the ends off, got the hack saw out and shortened them, also removed one of the middle supports, put the end back on and they fit like a glove, will be fitting them after the respray, will also respray the rails too as they came from a 300k car Laughing   Smile

with it being built into a part time camper, i'll probably need to fit a roof box for the holidays, also for styling purposes, it's better than a flat roof!

Ahh, but won't the roof bend and crease if you put stuff on those rails.

I have walked on hijet roofs plent of times and they are a bit wibbly wobbly.

Thus why we use gutter rail bars instead.

that was a concern, but i will strengthen the roof by fitting more internal cross bars across where the rails feet will mount, so the rails will screw through the roof skin and into the reinforcing cross bars inside, will be making a custom roof lining so the mounting bolts will be hidden.....well, thats the plan  Very Happy

They are pretty stable, i've drove plenty of other vehicles that handle much worse:-

Merc A Class
Vauxhall Agila
Land Rover Disco

I actually think Hijets handle remarkably well, just don't try to drift them too hard or you'll end up in a hedge backwards, they can take a bit of slide, but anymore than 20/30 degrees and they spin out big time.

Yeah, im not really bothered about drifting lol. Used to have a Hyundai Atos wich handled like a drunk pig, and was depressingly under powered on hills, but on the flat it would shift, and pull great smoking starts lol was heaps of fun
