Post by Plasticpig on Sun Nov 23, 2014 3:04 pm

Hi All.

Could someone please tell me what the axle ratio of a petrol engined van would be?

Thanks. Doug

AAHHHH !!! So you are building a Trike then Doug !! Yes??

Well to answer you question you have a choice probably none of which you will like as the Highest Ratio is pretty low.
They are thus : 993cc 3 cylinder Models up to 1998 are 4.875 to 1
: 1300cc Petrol Models 1998 onwards are 4.444 to 1
: 1200 Diesels are 5.125 to 1

Basically your engine will be revving its heart out ---unless of course you are using a Jap Bike Four Cylinder Engine then I guess that would be great -- giving blistering acceleration.

Woody.

You must be a mind reader.
I have built trikes using both Reliant and Rascal axles in the past, but as they are both getting a bit rare now I thought I would look at Hi jets as there are still a few about.

Thank you for the info. I have several options, but was hoping to use some 17 inch spoked wheels, so I will be doing the maths when I get time.

Thank you.

Cheers.Doug

The biggest expense is getting it to you. It has to be Palletised which is £45+vat any where in the UK.
Give me a call after 4pm today as I have yet another Funeral to go to this morning.

All you need is a complete 993 axle from a PICKUP as shock absorber mounting on the offside shocker on the van is behind the axle.
Whereas on the Pickup Axle both mountings are on the front of the axle.
You could cut the mounting off your axle and weld it on a 993 Van axle but obviously its easier to get a 993 pickup axle. SIMPLES !!!!

Its easier to fit 155x60x12 low profiles as that lowers your ratio by 10% which gives you 4.888-1
straight away without the aggro of changing axles. Also lowers the centre of gravity a bit too.

Hello again Bimbo,!!! You are out of luck then my friend. 4-444 to is to my knowledge the highest ratio Daihatsu did for the Hi-Jet.
