Fitting a Stereo?

Post by Penny PP on Fri Feb 06, 2015 9:33 am

Hi all

I want to fit a Stereo into my piaggio porter. If you know of a site or YouTube video that has instructions that would be a big help.

Also, if anyone has actual experience of putting one in, let me know what you did, where the speakers went etc etc....

Any advice would be much appreciated

Thanks PP

You have to wire it from scratch.

There are no speaker wires,

There are no power feeds,

There is no aerial.

Whilst I hesitate to contradict HJ, on all my vans there is a plug with 2x 6.35mm male spades at 90 degrees tucked up under the dash in the middle. One is earth, the other is live when the ignition its turned to 'ACC' or beyond. If you need a permanent live as well, as I did, you'll have to splice into one - I took mine from the c/locking supply at the fuse box.

Speakers - the door cards have 4 cutouts in a circle in their lowest section - you can feel through the covering and carefully complete the circle with a stanley knife or similar. Hole size is for a 4" speaker. Cables can be run into the wing and into the van behind the indicators.

Aerial - I got a £4ish aerial from Halfords which works fine sitting on the dash. One day I'll stick it to the windscreen. You could fit a pillar aerial, but means drilling holes for the lead and mounting screws.

I fitted the head unit into a Hijet centre console from one of my older vans, but the do come up on ebay.

Hope this helps.

Do you not have the holes in the pillar already? Mine did. Question

Maybe someone nicked the aerial before you got it? Mine is hole-less - and I have an idea that all stereos were a dealer, not factory, fit.

All Hijets i've seen have the little black sticker on the drivers A pillar covering the holes.

Yes, that connector is there for the ACC power and Ground. Just a permanent live needed which I rob off the front fog light relay plug under the dashboard.

Sure, but only on the inside.

No, on the outside. On the flatted off bit on the outside of the drivers side.

You mean here?

All my Hijets came with aerials fitted, so this Piaggio is first I've seen without. Maybe they tried to save a bit (groan) by not drilling a hole?

Odd, then again mine's a Hijet? I had the wee black panel stuck to mine, reckoned they all did.

So (before Oldie says it), the Piaggio is one hole better van?

(Lend me your coat, Oldie - someone's nicked the holes in mine)

Bloody Piaggio saving 0.01 euro per chassis by not drilling them!

But they do look better without the black sticker.

Make sure your stereo is the right size:

Max depth needs to be under 10cm or it will be too long and hit the bulkhead at the front.

Length approx 17cm and height 5cm.

This is if you want it to fit in the space on the front of the dash. You will have to file down the hole to its maximum size.
