Who needs brakes?

Post by HighlyJetted on Sun Mar 01, 2015 6:50 pm

Meee!!! It would seem.

Earlier last week thought brakes were getting rubbish, they have been neglected for some time.

Anyway, wednesday morning, the brake pedal goes to the floor with very little slowing action pale

Fluid was empty so put some in at work, pedal slightly better but still non brake like.

Bought drums, shoes and pads, and thursday night gave it some love.

Turns out the rear passenger slave cylinder is leaking, and the brake pipe that runs across the axle has rotted away and now had a little hole in it.

Replaced slave cylinder with a new one at a massive £18. Made a new axle pipe up out of copper and flare nuts.

Washed fluid filled shoes in solvent, then baked them off.

Put a second hand set of pads on the front which came off a van I broke which were like new.

Now I have working brakes again. Bargain!!

Hi Highly Jetted

This is my first post here- I really like the forum- you and Logi just give helpful advice - and no negative bitchy people, like I see on other sites. Anyway, my son and I are getting a 1999 1.3 EFI Hijet van back on the road. It has the typical problems, having read a bit on this forum.

I see you’ve done your rear brakes. Both rear brakes on our van need new slave cylinders. The drums are now off, and we’re seeing the wheel mounting flanges partly obscuring the brake shoes. We got the shoes off, but it looks like a pig to get new ones back on with those flanges in the way. Can those flanges come off leaving the brake shoe mounting back plate in place? From what I can see, if the half shaft comes out, it comes out with its bearing and the backing plate? So not much gained?

Any advice is very welcome.
