Diesel microvans in UK?

Post by Gorse on Fri Mar 06, 2015 8:16 pm

Hi, after being dazzled by my mates vauxhall rascal, I think a microvan would be perfect for my needs, work and play! I've searched the internet trying to find one that would suit all my needs, but can't seem to exactly find what i'm looking for in the UK, so was wondering if people could help me. Is there, or what, microvans are there that run on diesel and are multiple seaters (5, 6 etc)? Do such microvan exist and are they available in the UK? Any help is greatly appreciated as this would be the ideal van for my needs but it seems like it doesn't exist!

Cheers

Not heard of diesel Hijet MPV's, but vans had 1.2 & 1.4 lombardini dervs as an option. Somewhat snail-like, though.

Diesel hijets are terrible. The engines are prone to lots of common failure. And parts are almost impossible to find. Vacuum pumps are a common suspect.

On top of that, they have some very unusuall timing and triming methods to the diesel injecton system, which requires a bunch of very specialist tools to setup. Once you take the head off them, you will never make them run right again. I don't know anywhere that can work on those engines correctly. My best guess has been to find some kind of plant equipment engine engineer or boat engine engineer who has rebuilt them. These guys will be expensive, and uninterested in the hijet.

Fuel economy isn't that great. They are noisy and very very slow as PFM said.

So avoid diesel hijets like the plague!! Those lombardini LDW FOCS engines are dog poo.

Just get a 1.3 hijet. They are the ones to own. 993cc are a bit long in the tooth now, and various parts are hard to get.

Cheers for the replies. Fair play, diesel hijets sound like far too much of a hassle to run and even to find one in the first place! That's a shame, is there any other microvan, other than the hijet, that run on diesel? I suppose there are in Japan and Asia but nothing that common over here.

Another random question but how easy is it to take out the seats from a 6 seater hijet for the purpose of sometimes using as a van and sometimes as a people carrier?

I doubt there are any micro vans running on derv in Japan. They don't really "do" derv.

Diesels are horrible dirty things. A 1.3 with lpg would be cheaper to run as well.

Front two seats are held in by 4 torx bolts each. Back ones basically unclip at the back and a couple of bolts each side at the front where they attach to the floor. Pretty much a 10 minute job to go from 6 seater to an empty carpeted van.
