My Hijet Camper Project

Post by rosserluke on Fri Mar 13, 2015 8:00 pm

Hi there,  I thought it's time to introduce myself. My name is Luke and I'm from Neath in South Wales (Don't hold it against me!) Laughing I have recently bought a 1999 Hijet. The plan was to turn this little beauty into a Camper/Day van. I've had experience in the past with these sort of things, having owned a VW Camper and last year turning a trailer into a tear drop of sorts (Yes you heard me right... a trailer!) Here's is a few pictures of the project so far....

Not much to look at but it's a start...

Here is the basic plan... I know... its detailed right? (Microsoft paint at its best)

At home on the deck.

A start on the frame. I used 2x2 which cost me around £24 with a few extras. This took me most of a Sunday afternoon to complete.

I've started to clad the frame using pallet wood. Bear with me on this one... It's great to work with. Light and easy to cut. The best part is I haven't spent a penny on getting the wood.

Next came the floor and finishing off the cladding. I still have few pieces to do on this but its a working progress. The plan is to sand it back and clear coat it so it has a nice shine. Also here i have fitted 12v lights on the ceiling and a 240v hook up.

I have recently started on the outside. The front was in dire need of a face lift! I decided to use an aluminium vinyl on the top and Plasti-Kote on the bumpers. Overall it  hugely improved the look. I'm hoping to carry the black up to the wipers.

I want to carry the look around to the back. I have started on this but the weather has been awful here this week. I did manage to knock some rust bubbles out on the back and as long as the weather is dry tomorrow I will fill and put the vinyl on the back. Although I am happy with how the up lighters I managed to get in on Wednesday night turned out.

Well that's it for now but as i said, its a working progress. Please feel free to comment and any suggestions are really welcomed! For those that are interested I have put some pictures below of the teardrop/trailer and the VW too.  Very Happy

Good effort! Never seen a sauna in the back of a Hijet before! Love to see a close-up of the bumper-mod for the towbar.

I wouldn't dare start on the Welsh jokes as you're so new on here - but beware, Oldie will be along soon...

Haha all i need now is a 12v heater and a bucket of water...

Do you mean underneath on the bumper? It's loose in that picture and just resting on the back. Its waiting to have a coat of paint.

Aye that's alright... I love a good joke!

Just a little suggestion - Make sure you keep good access to the battery tray.

I built the frame around the battery tray and included space for a leisure battery and a 12v fuse box. Thanks for the suggestion Very Happy

" He's ok - - he's from Neath."

Well let's hope you don't need to get UNDER-NEATH to the gearbox and engine cover too often.
Any ideas where in Devon she came from in the first place??
