Sudden Poor Running Total Lack of Power?

Post by HiJet660cc4WD on Sun Jul 19, 2015 9:40 pm

Hi Guys,
Just took my new little pickup out for a spin this evening & all I did was fill her to the neck with fuel.... I had her idling while I checked the tire pressures & as I pulled out of the filling station I floored her & all I go in response was chugg-chugg, splutter!!... after maybe only half a mile I loast all power (although engine still running?) I hardly had the power to pull in & hardly any throttle response at all. After switching off & back on shes was right as reign!.... I nervously took he onto motor way & just my luck, on the entrance sliproad he decided to do same Evil or Very Mad
A quick switch-off & back on & off she went again!
All was fine but she keeps doing same Mad .... after repeated off/on's I managed to limp home.... I'm thinking it has to be electrical??
My feeling is it's fuel starvation, but why would she come good immediately after off/on???... only get a mile or so before it all goes funky again.
I only have her a few days but she was brilliant the whole way home (for just over 100miles @ pretty steady 100km/h)
Note she is the 660cc version with efi.
Anyone fathom a guess... I've parked up now & disconnected the battery.
Help!
(thank god shes destined for the Mongol rally NEXT year... & not this weekend!! No )

I suspect you might have rusty fuel pump/pickup pipe/filter syndrome.

Its very common on these vans.

Gone dark now!
I'll have another go at her again during the week - hopefully just fuel filter? She's in pretty good nick so not thinking that rust is a problem, but I did have a car that displayed similar problems & it was simply a blocked fuel filter.
Thanks guys, I'll let you know how I get on with her.

The most common thing with the hijets is the fuel pump itself getting bunged up with rust.

I have sold about 30 new fuel pumps in 2 years!!!

Many Thanks HighlyJetted....
Hopefully it's simple enough, I want to use it as much as I can so that I can build up reliability... especially when attempting a 16,000km journey to outer Mongolia in the little thing!!!
Haven't a notion where to get spares, she is a Jap import???
I'll check the fuel pump & maybe drop you a PM about fuel pumps! Smile

If you have a rusty fuel system. Make sure you coat the tank with that sealant stuff, or half way across Kazakhstan you will be in deep trouble!

Well its mostly an s85 Hijet, the same as ours. And some engine parts will be similar to a 993cc uk Hijet. But don't bank on it.

It's amazing what the Japs can do - they didn't unleash the auto over here. Thankfully.

I would give it some new ATF. Make sure you use the same as what’s in there already, any doubt drain it all.

Hi Again guys,
Totally head wrecking... the little truck has been fine last few days???
I let it with the battery disconnected & only reconnected yesterday & give her a spin... it was perfect!
Good & bad news!
In one sense I'd rather the fault was still there... I can't have this intermittent unreliability craic!
I only have it a couple of weeks & am trying to get to grips with the little thing.
Thankfully I've a year to get ready for the Mongol Rally.. looking forward to getting acquainted with her!
I'll keep you posted if she plays up again!

You are about to spend 8 weeks driving that thing all day, every day.

Strip plenty of it down, give it race car like preparation.

Take plenty of spare wheels, a front strut, a rear leaf spring, prop shaft etc.
