Noise in rear axle when decelerating

Post by sunnylife on Sun Jul 26, 2015 8:34 pm

Hello Gentlemen!

I am female owner of Piaggio Porter 2009, so please bear with me.  Embarassed

I drive Porter because I am going to move the Romahome demountable box to this chassis from my old Suzuki Supercarry.

Before that, I am trying to fix some noise that I get in the rear axle, when decelerating. I understand from various sources that this noise is because of too much backlash in the rear differential and needs adding/moving some shims to adjust that backlash.

Do you know of any garage who would be ready to do such adjustment in Piaggio Porter? (I can drive anywhere in the UK – this is why I have a camper!)

Or may be some of you, self-masters,  could do such job for me?

Many thanks

Elena

Before you go too far into major works.

Make sure the UJ's on the prop shaft are working freely by unbolting one end of the prop shaft.

And make sure the oil is changed in the diff.

These two simple little jobs may shut up the drone.

Thank you very much – this is a good idea.

I actually just topped-up the axle differential oil, for these very reasons.

Now I wonder, if I should change the dif. oil using the one with higher viscosity – could it partly compensate for too much backlash and at least reduce the noise ?

Check the shaft first, it's a known issue, mine was noisy, sounded like the diff.
