Roof rack has an amazing loud whistle

Post by Lex_Michdebus on Fri Aug 14, 2015 7:00 pm

I added a roof rack to my Hijet, but when this baby hits 88, I get some serious whistling! So damn loud it really hurts my ears (and those of the people on the street).

So is there anyone that knows what can stop its whistle? It starts at around 90 KPH...

Picture under here.

Easy, don't exceed 86! Does it vary if the rack is empty or loaded?

Haven't tried driving with anything on the rack. But with a lot of rain it seems less noisy, but still noisy. I'm thinking of taping the holes on the underside of the rack as soon as this horribly inconvenient rain stops.

Sorry, but why keep it on the van if you not using it? Take it off and problem solved. Put it back when you need it and the cargo will probably eliminate the whistle.

Seriously? You need two people to put it on the roof, takes a day to find someone to help me get it on there and every time I put it on it gets 20 new scratches. I'm not putting this thing on the roof and take it off every month. Are you really suggesting this, or are you just trying to be witty? If Einstein or Edison or Newton was more like you we'd all have a lot less problems, you got that right...

He would have solved the problem in stead of avoiding it.

I take mine on and off single handed when I need it.

And mine in a great big 1 piece steel box section heavy thing.

Driving round all the time with a roof rack on is a bit stupid because it adds loads of drag thus lower fuel economy etc, and they look ugly.

Sure, but he'd have taken it off to a) examine it and b) enjoy improved economy in the meantime. The simplest solutions are often the most elegant.

If the ends of the roof bars are open it would be like blowing the top of an open bottle. Are they capped?

Can't you train it to whistle a tune you like. That way you wouldnt be whining so much about it rather than the roof rack whining.

Seriously, I know what you mean about the scratches. I just have a pair of Roof Bars for my ladders. I am 6ft tall and struggle to get them on without more paint damage.

I usually put a couple of towels on the other side to protect the roof. They are a permanent fixture now and so darned useful.
With the over 100 Hi-Jets I have dismantled I have never had a full roof rack.

I have one which is a full steel frame, clips on the front and back - all one piece made of box section steel.

Got it with a van I broke. Came from a window cleaner or something.

This stops the wistle, but that's mainly because I can't get it to 88 when the top mattress flips up half way (after it's been tied down of course)...

Will try to tape shut all the opened crevices I can find later, couldn't find the time to do so in the past weeks. It's just too useful to take off, even though I only use it 'now and then'. Everything that doesn't fit inside goes on the roof.
