alternator upgrade crank pully alternatives

Post by jbenny2 on Thu Mar 03, 2016 8:27 pm

Hi all, I looked at upgrading the alternator a while back and found a denso one on ebay that matched the mounting points but had a higher output (can't remember the exact Amps as I've lost it in the back of the shed now). My problem was to drive the higher output really needs a multi v belt not the single one on the standard van. I've been down the road of upgrading alternators with single v belts and you keep tightening them to stop the squeak, eventuality either snapping the mounts or buggering the water pump !

Only solution is to fit a multi v belt, I've managed to get the water pump and alternator pulleys from other cars that match the offset and size, my stumbling block is the crank pulley, as in needs to match the woodruff key which is pretty unique to the engine block. Has anyone got any ideas on what other engines use this engine block or crank that may have a multi v belt crank pulley?

What you need is the set up off of the Grand Move 1600. It is a Polyvee belt with larger pulleys. It uses the same size Alternator, but a higher output. That is one of the reasons I bought 6 Grand Move's last year, mainly for the 1600 engines to put in Hi-Jet's but also for the Alternator set up. D1NOH has had one set off me and needs more but I need 3 or 4 sets.
To get the whole set up off, the engine needs to be removed though. A right pain.

that's the alternator I've got. it's from a grand move 50amp compared to the standard hijet 40amps. I didn't know the rest of the pulleys are interchangeable as well. i guess the hunt begins, ebay hear i come !!

Because you cannot get at the Crankshaft Pulley bolts. They are so close to the chassis rail. Taking the engine out might be bit of an over exaggeration, but you would have to drop the engine on the offside to get at the bolts. Also the bracket on the back of the engine is virtually impossible to get at too. You have power steering on there too and on two I have, they have Air Con too. Must take about 30% of the engine power!!
As I am stripping the whole engine out anyway - - -

The amount D1noh uses I reckon 150 alternators would be more appropriate than 150 amps. On that Automotive Electrical Catalogue you emailed me I found an Alternator that seemed to be the same dimensions but was about 80 or 90 amps. I will have to have another look through it over the weekend.

Yes I have found the File with the Alternator listings with 60amp, 70amp and 85amp all with PolyVee pulleys. Will find out from Matt how one goes about getting a hold of them from the Supplier.
Grand Move has either 50amp or 70amp for models with Air Con. So looks like I already have two 70amp Alternators in the yard.
And the answer is No you can't D1noh Rolling Eyes

I have got their website off Google, Matt. Sorry if I was taking liberties there. I will contact them and find out more details and post details on here.
