I can't get it in!!!

Post by PFM on Wed Mar 23, 2016 6:09 pm

Petrol, I mean! My '02 van will only take a small flow from the nozzle when filling - any more and it clicks off. Only started recently, and the rubber hose between the filler neck and the tank squeezes easily. Anyone encountered this before?

Good moaning PFM. In the bottom of the metal filler pipe there is a plastic insert with two lightly sprung flaps. They are always closed to stop fuel surge back up the Filler neck.
When filling up the ingoing petrol opens them. Sounds like yours have jammed shut.

Dead easy to sort out though. Just remove the Rubber Hose off the end of the metal filler pipe and the black plastic valve pulls out easily. If it is jamming then just leave it out. If you need another one, I can send you one.

Good thinking, that is a highly likely scenario.

Thanks for the responses, will investigate when tank has been emptied a bit (yes, I persevered and filled it!)

Spot on, Woody! An O-ring had broken and become lodged in the flaps, stopping them opening. Not sure of the O-rings purpose, but have removed it and re-fitted the valve. Don't think that my flaps are sprung, but maybe that's where the ring came in.

It is a rather weak spring, just enough to return the flaps to the closed position. I am not sure if there is an O ring around the plastic housing shoulder. I can't remember now. Can't see that it would serve to do too much though.

Glad you have got it sorted. One of the few easy fixes on a Hi-Jet.
