Cigarette lighter socket

Post by tornas on Sun Apr 03, 2016 9:13 pm

I found out the cigarette lighter does not have enough power to charge my phone when I'm using GPS and playing music (through my car stereo AUX). Is there any way to make it more powerful? Would a bigger fuse help or is that a stupid question?

At first: Never change a fuse with a higher number. Unless you want to set things on fire. :-)
According to the schematic diagram the fuse should be 15Amp.
You phone will need to be charged with something like 2Amps. So thats all right.
Because of using the GPS and audio the phone needs more power than the 2Amps. You have reached its limits and therefore it won't charge as you wish.

Ok tnx, thought it was a car problem but now I know it's not. Further investigation tells me that some USB chargers only charge 1Amp so I might try another charger.

Thanks for sparing me the hassle of having to extinguish a car fire btw.

Usb chargers don't like really low batteries. Also had problems with the tab, wouldn't charge unless I used the Samsung charger.

The problem also arises with a medium charged phone battery (and a full car battery).

GPS apps are very energy expensive because the phone has to communicate with multiple satellites in a certain way whilst keeping the screen on all the time. My phone (iPhone 6) is said to draw about 1.6Amp max from a charger, even if the charger is 2Amp. I don't think (not 100% sure) it should cost more than 1.6Amp to use GPS and play music at the same time though.

Buy a good brand charger. Anker is a good brand for USB charging related stuff.

http://amzn.to/2lcdJn6

Ankers PowerIQ Technologie und VoltageBoost in Kombination ermöglichen die schnellstmögliche Ladung von bis zu 4.8A oder 2.4A pro Port.

2.4 Amps per socket, I don't think you're going to get a stronger one.

ALSO IMPORTANT! Use good brand USB cables! And the longer a USB cable, the more power loss you'll have inside the cable.

Bought this a while ago as an upgrade of the old one and thought this board might also like it if in need of a charger in the car that can handle a bit of drain...

Germans/Dutch: http://amzn.to/2jzzmBq
UK: http://amzn.to/2irhvJF

Make sure to use proper cables (Anker also sells good quality cables, order them together with the charger to save on shipping). Cheap cables aren't good for current, you all should know...

Anyway, nevermind me if you're still living in the stone age.
