Jack, spark plug cables, draft..

Post by tornas on Sat Apr 23, 2016 8:50 pm

Got my first lesson in car mechanics today! Interesting to learn a bit about how my car.

During the course we encountered a few things that the instructor wasn't sure about. It's miscellaneous stuff so I'll put my questions here. Would be cool if you guys could give me some feedback Smile

The jack...
First of all, my gf tried jacking the car up with what seemed to be the original jack (same as this one), but the jack could barely reach high enough to lift the car. When she put it under the car and cranked it up to its max height, the jack snapped and the bearing broke. It's beyond repair. So.. what did we do wrong? And when I buy a new jack, should I go for an original (which I would prefer if it's not inferior) or for another?

The spark plug cables...
This was a weird one. The previous owner gave us an old spark plug cable that he still had. That one looked wayyy different than the ones that are installed in the car now:

Those aren't the right ones are they? Any recommendations on which ones to use?

The draft...
This one's been talked about alot on this forum: the draft coming from the flimsy headlight cover... I'm thinking about drilling a small hole in it and in the chassis to fix it with a bolt or a cable tie. Would you recommend this or is there a better option?

Oh and one other thing:

My van has panel doors but I want doors with windows. When I told the garage manager I was thinking about buying other doors, he told me that I should just find somebody who can fit windows in the current doors. Says that's less risky. What do you think?

The spark plug cables = HT Leads :- The one in the photo is incorrect.

The draft :- Yes, add fixings/screws to the top - this will cure most of the draft

The jack:- In 12 years of Hijet ownership, I have never had to or wanted to use the emergency jack.

Cables & draft: noted, thanks!
Jack: I see.. What do you do when you have a flat tire?
And I'm curious about your opinion on the doors?

Flat tyre - not had that problem yet. When I change wheels and tyres at home/work I use these, which I have a pair of http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Arcan-2000kg-Aluminium-And-Steel-Service-Jack-Model-HJ2000EU-/111950985911?hash=item1a10cc7ab7:g:QoIAAOSwLpdW-b-t

Finding doors in the correct colour shade, and in ideal condition can be difficult. But genuine rear doors have wind up/wind down windows - these winders ALWAYS fail. If you get the doors cut and glass fitted they will either be non openers, or they will have sliding sideways glass. I would expect a glass firm to charge around £400 to £500 to supply and install rear windows (at a guess).

35 euros is not bad! But I wouldnt even know where to put that thing that HJ posted. I'm not only the proud owner of a microvan, I also live in a micro-apartment.

I have exactly the same set, Jack, Folding Axle Stands and Folding Wheel Chocks in the plastic case.  I  bought a year ago from Screwfix.

I got it for my Romahome before I went off down to Sidmouth in Devon last June. It fits neatly into the under seats bunk storage lockers. Really worthwhile addition to the Tool kit.

So I've been googling for the right ht leads but can only find cables that more or less look like the ones that are in my hijet right now (I think they're suited for older models?). Any advice on which brand/type I should use?

For a cheap jack you should also keep your eye on the Aldi and Lidl. They are often selling acceptable jacks for an acceptable price. Where to put it? Just throw it in the back of your van! They also had cheap 2 ton axle stands the other day, 20 euros for a pair if I recall correctly.

About the spark plug cables: have you tried carpartsdirect.nl already?

Also; post videos of you girlfriend jacking please!

Bummer. They have a set suitable for my version (1996, 993cc carb.), but I guess they're not right for yours. What's your license plate number? That way I can check other websites. (You can send it in a PM if you're uncomfortable with having it out in the open, same goes for the video)

-edit- https://www.winparts.nl/motordelen-toebehoren/bougie-kabels/daihatsu/hijet-bestelwagen-s85-bouwjaar-1992-12/c1180-554-14146/bougiekabelset/p327122.html

These perhaps? They don't have it in stock... And I don't know about the brand Blue Print.

-edit2- https://www.dutchcarparts.nl/15797-daihatsu-hijet-van-13i-16-v-kat-1998-/auto-onderdelen/motor/ontsteking/bougiekabel

Nipparts, I would trust those. But again, you'll have to email them about it.

-edit3- http://www.mijnautoonderdelen.nl/daihatsu/hijet/65971/65977/bougiekabelset

Again Nipparts, again "op aanvraag", send them an email. I searched for the parts that fit a Van with 1.3 16v engine.

-edit4- The Nipparts part number: N5386018. That should help you finding it better, perhaps on eBay or Amazon.de?

Ah yes that number helps. Posted a few requests here and there so I'll have to wait.

It seems that the cables that are in my car now fit some 993 models. If you want I could send them to you when (if) I find myself proper cables. So far the engine's starting and running perfectly fine with em btw Smile

I'll send the video via PM.

Throw them in your parts bin, you always need parts when you fix your own cars.

The websites I tried:

http://carpartsdirect.nl/
http://www.besteonderdelen.nl/
https://www.winparts.nl/home
http://www.onderdelendirect.nl/
https://www.dutchcarparts.nl/
http://www.easycarparts.nl/
http://www.mijnautoonderdelen.nl/

I'd advise you to create a folder named "Auto-onderdelen" and put those websites in there. Then when you need parts, start from the top.

Great video by the way, that gf of yours has one strong and firm grip on her that's for sure!

Wow, that is expensive. They have spark plug cables for the first en second cylinder (didn't know there's a different one for every cylinder) and each is around € 90. So that'd be €360 for four. Sounds a bit steep!

And no cables for the third en fourth cylinder? Or is it only the first cylinder that needs a different one? Getting lost now!

i didnt look for cables on their site it was more to add to your carparts suplier list
i think its a fault on their site... that doesnt make sense indeed  Neutral
but they have got a lott of other specific parts so put them in your partsdealerslist Wink
sometimes you can copy the partsnumber from an expensive site.. then copy and paste it in your google and it will give you more sites with the same parts, like lex did
