tip top that boss init
bike engines truly are the future of the hijet
Bob on .....
may I ask ?
servo vacuum drill n tap inlet manifold ?
and would you think that 2 starter motor solenoids would work for changing gear?
and , and..... the reverse thing, your thoughts? implant a flywheel ring gear and starter motor somewhere?
chain drive spin a shaft ? will the prop still line up with one ?

I permit you to ask....

dennispenis wrote:

Used the carb balancing vents - bikes don't really have a manifold as such.

dennispenis wrote:

I've used good old fashioned cable shift - had it made up. Solenoids are a nice idea but how do you find neutral? Wink

dennispenis wrote:

Not really solved that one! I only go forwards with power, backwards is done via hard graft.

dennispenis wrote:

I've used a prop shaft, its actually a suzuki jimny shaft as they are telescopic.

cheers dude bloody neutral eh
that wont work then ,so a gear change cable ? 2 off em push n pull? and a single one for the clutch ?
dont think the old push bike brake cable will be up to that where did you get those made up ?
so is the rear axle flange the same as a jimmi ?
and and .rear axles what's the diff ratio ? mines one of the highly desirable executive fanny magnet lombododar 1.2 versions if that makes a ratio difference?

Sounds a good idea to me Matt.  Email no problems other than sending 2or 3 photos at a time. That's why I use  WhatsApp all the time as you can send 10 pictures at a  time - - -  but as for the Forum,  it's not just me that is living in the past.

All my pictures are on the Phones and  both Sony Tablets.  I haven't used my laptop in over 2 years . My friend Paul has uploaded Windows 10 to it just a couple of weeks ago but due to certain misfortunes of life recently I have been rather busy, then this week I have been really rough with a  damn awful flu virus spending 4 days bedbound. Yesterday was my first day up out of bed.
Oddly enough I have put the laptop on charge to top it up as there are pictures on there of 2 Alfa Romeo Aluminum  1800 Twin Cam
Engines I want to advertise on eBay.

Well you really pushed the boat out buying a 1200 Diesel. Now I realise why your Forum name is so apt.
I have got a virtually complete Diesel Van with around 78,000 on the clock and the engine for one of them is very good. So if you or anyone else is in need of a load of spares for a Diesel  especially the quirky bits like hoses fuel pump alternator, starter etc £125, will buy the whole van.  The Nearside sliding door is a windowed one from an MPV

And totally illegal to do so too and does the engine no good as it runs very hot on Paraffin.

The real problem with kerro is that I go past a ministry check point twice a day and a shitty old "van" like sooty is a prime target for a good pulling

Think I'll just stick with boring old diesel engined road vehicle stuff

Good find, nice idea.

There is a quaife one on the market, which is quite a lot of money. But word on the street says they are unreliable and prone to breaking Sad

I'm sure my low power bike engine setup would be OK, but I would have to move my engine forwards a bit to keep a reasonable prop shaft angle.

How much ? I only want to go backwards a few feet I could get to south Korea for that much
I think if I ever get round to it,it will be a gear reduction starter motor, flywheel on a shaft chain driven and bolt the prop to that down the scrappi 20 quid, couple of pillow blocks Bish bosh bingo ?
Its very unladylike pushing your van backwards you know

If you are wanting to do something without much spending or work and tooling, a bike engine conversion is not for you!

My conversion stands me at about £1500 and about 150 man hours of skilled labour.

And its not totally finished yet, it will soak up another £300 to swap the rear axle, plus another 25 hours approximately.

If you want a new quaife reversing box, just the box alone is here with its price tag https://shop.quaife.co.uk/quaife-reversing-box

From chatting to other bike engine car owners, the starter motor reverse conversions will barely move the car if its not on totally level ground. A speed hump will stall the starter motor straight away, as will a drop kerb. One guy I spoke to spent hours doing a start motor reverse conversion, but it won't actually reverse his single seater race car into his garage as there is a 30mm lip to get over and its a slight uphill up his drive.

Yes you could gear it, but not a single sprocket onto the propshaft job, you need to build further reduction stages, and building gearing it not for the crude bodger as exact alignment, and pitch is vital.

Just the sheet of alloy over the back of the van cost £150 including cutting and folding. Then there are stainless hinges, the box section braces, and then about £40 worth of knock on rubber seal. Bet that body including the arches, the tail lights etc stands me at over £300.

Fuel tank was £120 second hand, plus a pump, filter, pipe work, hose clips, pipe mounts, stainless mounting bands for the tank. That's a £250 fuel system.

Prop shaft reworking and purchasing, maybe £100.

Drive flange engineering work, and materials. I swapped doing a pair of broken coil springs for that which cost about £90 in parts and a couple of hours labour.

Oil cooler, oil filter conversion plate, aero quip fittings, pipe work, oil and custom sump flange fittings - right there came to over £300.

Decent exhaust headers to cut up to make manifold was £100. The the exhaust flexi pipe stuff was like £40 a metre, plus the stainless clamps, gaskets, bolts - £200 exhaust system basically.

Grinding blades, masks, cutting blades, welding gas, tips, tap'n'dies, lubricants, paints, insulation tape, cable ties - bet there's over £100 in those bits.

Every visit to thread fast for bolts, rivets, nuts, washers. There's about £80's worth of receipts from that one shop alone - the pair of bolts that hold the alloy body down were £10 each.

Custom cables for accelerator, clutch, gear change, choke - again over £200 worth.

There's more buried in there. I thought it would be a cheap couple of weekend build before I started Wink

If you also factor in the cost of the engine, buying the pickup itself, the wheels, the tyres, the seats, floor mats, wind deflectors, brake bias controller and full braking system re plumb, brand new piaggio maxi mirrors and the cost of the conversion - that's not far off a £4000 hijet parked in my garage and its not even finished.

I bet I spunk another £600 at it to finish the ductings, coolant blower fans and diff conversion and custom hand brake cables. Hard earned money down some stupid drain!

If you think you can build stuff out of thin air then its time to get super rich.

That's the cost of the van and everything though your probably best mentally blocking those figures
I was thinking just the cost of the engine swap stuff
Flexi exhaust pipe is the stuff millionaires use you know
You wouldn't of been able to buy that fancy stuff during the war you know give it 18 months and it will come apart anyway always does
And a water cooed engine may if solved the heating problem?
