If the Cap fits.....

Post by Raggy on Sun Feb 05, 2017 3:37 pm

Just been doing my check on oil and water no problems but just wondered how snug a fit the engine breather/oil filler cap should be. Mine seems a loose ish fit, probably the small tube that fits to the top stopping it bobbling off (though I doubt that woukd happen). So the question is, how snug a fit in the hole should it be (and if thats not an invite for Logi to comment I dont know what will be!)

A little trick that I have used in the past past is two O rings with an inside diameter of 21mm and a thickness of 2.5mm on the wide groove on the top of the filler cap ( or the bottom if you have the cap the correct way down - - just in case comedians want to add to it).

It gives a nice firm fit to stop any leaking of oil or air. Yes AIR, no H.
These can be purchased for a few pence from a good Hardware Shop or Plumbers Merchant. The whole box of O rings cost me £15-54. I bet a new Filler Cap from Daihatsu would be dearer than that by far.
The two O rings pictured are 3.5mm section to make it clearer for you. Use 2.5mm section ones.
