Engine fault orange lamp coming on

Post by MATTT on Fri Jun 23, 2017 10:03 am

The fault light used to come on now and again, its became almost everytime I drive now,the van runs fine otherwise ,no problems
It stays on until the ignition is switched off and restart the engine and carry on ,normally coming on within 5 ,10 mins of driving now.
Ive shorted out the diagnostic plug and only get a constant flashing code ,which ive read on here is no faults stored
Also noticed a no fault code can be MAF or TPS sensor problem , but no symptoms of poor running as mentioned on the thread to test them
Any ideas or shall I not worry about it !

Do you do short journeys Matt or stop - start town driving, or stuck in traffic jams?

If so, then it sounds to me like one of the Lamda Sensors on the exhaust system are getting sooted up and setting the Engine Management light off. There is one on the exhaust manifold which can be a swine to get off, and some have another at the front of the silencer after the Cataclysmic Perverter .
I get the same problem with my 2003 MPV if I leave it ticking over too long in the morning to warm the engine up. But I have the luxury of LPG and just flick it over to LPG and within 5 seconds the warning light is out and back on to petrol again.

If you take both sensors out which requires a decent 22mm Ring spanner (to get the manifold one off you will have to undo the Flange mounting bolt with the big spring on it back enough to get the spanner over the Lamda Sensor) Don't be tempted to try and get it off with the open end of the spanner or Mole grips. If you haven't got a 22mm spanner, go and buy a decent one.
You will also in both cases have to disconnect the Multi-plug very carefully in order to get the 22mm spanner over the plug and down the wires to the plug. Neither connectors are particularly easy to get to.

Clean them up with a new wire brush and if possible blow the soot out of the holes with an air line. It usually does the trick for me on a non Dual Fuel. Best of luck. New, 3 wire Lamda Sensors are about £25 each from a Motor Factors if that doesn't do the trick. I've never bought one yet. Cleaning has always worked for me.

You can't have enough spanners in your tool box.

Your right there PFM. Why do people ask for advice then choose to totally ignore the advice proffered and go their own way because they think they know better. Why bother to ask in the first place if they are so knowledgeable or in this case just too damn lazy. It's beyond me.

I doubt if Injector Cleaner is going to sort the problem. The symptoms Matt has put forward are classic Lamda Sensor ones in my experience. But who am I to say?? I have only owned hundreds of Hi-Jets, repaired them and stripped them for 14 years. I'm not a trained mechanic. Just a Jack of all Trades.
There could be other issues causing the Lamda sensor to soot up like a faulty MAP Sensor at over £260 from Daihatsu.

Hi
Not choosing to ignore,or being lazy or think I know best ,or else I wouldnt have asked some advice by people who know more than me  ,only reason i thought run some fuel cleaner and take it on a long run and hope to burn the soot off
Thought it cant do any harm to try before doing anything else ,so i wouldnt  say i was ignoring advice.
I need it everyday at the moment as im just finishing off my old Citroen so didnt really want to start on it until the other ones back together

Sorry if I have hacked anyone off, that wasnt my intention
Again, thank you for the previous advice

Matt

Point taken Matt. Petrol Injector Cleaner does just that if they aren't really badly dirty. It also helps to clean the inlet valves and inlet ports.
Once it has been burnt in the cylinder and exits the exhaust port it won't have the cleaning ability it had going into the cylinder because it has been burnt up.
I have used it in rough running engines and sometimes with good results, but more often not.

But give it a try Matt. It's not as expensive as buying a decent 22mm spanner I must admit.
Just this afternoon I nipped over to my friend Des the Snap-On man and bought two 3/8" drive 14 mm deep sockets and they cost me £33-48.
If it does the trick then you can give me all the stick you like. Mind you I won't sell you any needed spares in the future. lol!

Well just splashed out on a pair of snap on tool boxes off a friend who was buying bigger
so I have space for the 22mm now Smile

Since doing the fault code check with the wire link, the light has stopped coming on , and has been ok for the last 2 days.

That is what threatening it with chastisement with a 22mm does for you. Let's hope that it stays off.
Jammy beggar with the tool boxes.
