SAVING DAISY-Looking for someone with knowledge locally

Post by Dawdling Daisy Doodah on Tue Aug 01, 2017 11:44 am

Hi, I am new to this site,
I have had my van for two years and have converted her myself to a little camper. Unfortunately I am having problems with the gear box. I had a second hand one put in last year which was great. Now its not's so great, difficult to select 3rd, and she makes a very loud whining in 5th we don't use 5th as she sounds like something out of star wars:
I absolutely love this van and refuse to give up on her, she is 1996
am not sure
whether to put a whole new engine, she is a 993 can I put a 1.3 in?
I don't know if it is the linkage?
Would a Suzuki Carry engine fit?

]I am based in West Sussex and have been trying to find someone who is a bit more local who knows about these vans. Can anybody give me any advice

Welcome and you have come to the right place. In answer to your question, that have been asked many times before:
No you cant just put a 1.3 instead of a 993 (too many differences)
No a Suzuki Carry engine will not fit
If the engine is still working fine then why give up on it.
Sounds as if you have been sold a gearbox that was on its way out. Some on ebay at the moment. Swapping it again sounds the easiest option.
Is it a linkage?.....only a closer look could tell definitely but does not sound like it.
Dont worry someone will be along shortly to offer more advice I'm sure.

Sounds like you are going to have to go to the Cathedral then and pray for a miracle - or rob the contribution boxes to pay for a new gearbox. Either way that won't work. Unfortunately I don't have any 993cc gearboxes left - just 1300 ones.
Make sure that some unscrupulous Breaker on Flea Bay doesn't sell you a 1300 gearbox. At least with Fleabay you have got some redress if there is a problem.

Just one point. You have checked to make that you have got gear oil in the gearbox and it's not devoid of the important stuff haven't you??

Welcome Daisy. Gearbox problems are fairly rare so you do seem to have been unlucky. I have a 'spares' van which still has its gearbox. I do not have the time to remove it, but you would be welcome to the whole van for a modest price if that's of any interest. It is almost complete apart from radiator, handbrake lever, O/S/F window glass & regulator and fuel tank IIRC.

Well my 'spares' van was carted away today to the dark side of the county (West Sussex). He has already been renamed 'Derek the Donor', though I'd have thought Donal more appropriate! It's due to undergo surgery to remove the gearbox so hopefully DDD will be able to travel a bit more quickly. Sp I no longer have ANY 1.0 vans, just the two 1.3's. Shocked

I reckon the bullbar you had was the rarest bit Raggy - and you've made it look great. Just waiting to see the end result before I comment on your thread.

The Gear box is out, Daisy is going into the van hospital on Wednesday, either for quick injection of gearbox oil or a full transplant. Fingers crossed
