How hots hot - what's your temp gauge say

Post by Fuzzydoguk on Tue Apr 19, 2011 9:06 am

Hi all
Help me out here and tell me I'm being paranoid

When driving what does your temp gauge do? Mine hovers at the middle then in traffic etc veers towards being worrying but then seems to drop back to the middle, tell me this is all good and I'm not spending my time converting a blowy up van Smile

Sounds about right especially if the fan cuts in, very similar to one of mine. Some owners wire a switch across the sender in the rad so the fan can also be operated manually.

Our Hijet overheats in traffic. Rolling Eyes
So I just wired the rad fan to a switch. Then as soon as the temperature goes over half way, I flick the switch & start the fan.
Although if I'm stuck for a while, I'll turn off the engine until the traffic starts to move. Wink

Strangely my S reg Hijet (rather than the M reg referred to above) usually runs at 1/4 to 1/3 on the gauge - only gets up to half-way in traffic. They do seem to vary somewhat.

We have a spare set of clocks and they do different things if you run the van about on one set and then stop change the clocks and go again.

That's interesting - suggesting that it's the gauges (voltage stabiliser?) interpreting the info differently rather than the engine/cooling system giving differing result. Anyone else have evidence of this?

with all the gauges the needles have no mechanical stops built in only the speedo. I have been playing with making white dial kits and I found that you can move the unit and put the needle back in the same place on the display and be a different spot on the gauge. as I found with the fuel gauge in the end I had to fill up to the top of the tank and with the ignition on put the needle on the full mark and the temperture about the right spot for when its cold at the same time.

Mine's always about half, lifts slightly over then the fan cuts in in heavy traffic.
