Fuel consumption?

Post by PFM on Fri Jul 01, 2011 7:28 pm

Just seen this van on ebay - he's claiming 65.5 mpg! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DAIHATSU-HIJET-VAN-S-REG-1300c-BLUE-5-MOT-1-ROAD-TAX-/150626355262?pt=UK_Commercial_Trucks&hash=item231207c83e

I bought my first 993 in 1995, and (yea, it's sad) have recorded every fuel fill since 2003 on a spreadsheet. It now has 84k on the clock, and the running average has gradually increased to 35.79 mpg. My 1998 993 (not me driving, usually) only gets 32.46 mpg.

So, how does this compare with other 993's from those of you also sensible enough to keep tally?

My 993 efi returned 50mpg once but is usually about 43 on petrol. On lpg it is about 32.

I suppose it would be possible to better 50mpg if the car is properly serviced and in excellent condition but I would have my doubts about that claim.

Squeezed 24 litres into my tank yesterday as had a 10p/l off voucher. Thought the guage has been a bit off for a while as never shows full, so I reckon whe it shows empty there must be around 10litres in it. Anyway, my running average is now up to 39mpg.

65mpg is absolute rubbish. I've seen people claiming silly mpg a few times. Thats around twice the official figures.

I seem to be getting about 36 out of the 1.3, haven't a clue if that's bad or good. Trouble is I don't have an accurate way of measuring it without running the tank dry Rolling Eyes

I've done a few calculations on my new white one and my old silver one, both being 1300 versions.

If I drive them very nicely I can get about 45mpg, if I thrash them I get about 30mpg and normal driving about 42mpg or there abouts.

The fuel economy has got better on my new white one over the first few weeks, I put it down to having the battery disconnected while it was stood. The first few runs out it ate petrol, didn't run that smooth and wasn't very powerful. I think the ECU learns to find the sweet spot.

Sure you do, Pasiro. Fill the tank and record the mileage. Drive. Fill again and record the mileage and the litres bought if it's not on your receipt. Deduct first mileage from second to see how far you've driven in miles. Convert the litres to gallons (multiply by .22) and divide your driven miles by gallons used to give miles per gallon.

If you do this every time you fill up you and record on a spreadsheet you will build an increasingly accurate record of your mpg. May be even more accurate if you regularly use the same pump and always go to, say, second click of the nozzle.

I thought I was getting 50 mpg, but having redone my calculations, it's actually 37mpg on long journeys. Sigh, there I was thinking I had a really economical little motor. Sad

If you fill up £25 worth of fuel at £1.38 per litre...

You get about 18 Litres or 4 gallons

45 mpg = 180 miles per £25

30 mpg = 120 miles per £25

Mines is getting 40-45mpg. Mostly cos I sit at 50ish and most of my commute is motorway and its empty that time of the morning . Really want a lpg one cos I do 50 miles a day commuting.

Less of your filthy language! I'm faithful.

I now have another wee vanny on my drive, and its a gas one, but it's got overheating syndrome.
