You could give the hijet a nice flexible grip like coating so when you roll it you won't slide too far.

I dug up this thread from the graveyard as I'm thinking about spraying my hijet (after which I will finally have enough courage to post some pics on this forum).

Anybody have any experience with plastidip? I know it works with matte colors but I'd like to have a glossy finish. There's a product called 'glossifier' but don't know if it's any good.

About the color. I'd like the van to look original or almost original - no obvious customizations. So I'm leaning towards white, as that's the original color. However if I invest in painting the car anyway, then it kind of feels like a waste of money to go with boring white.

So... Choose your favorite (or if you have any other ideas let me know):

i am planning to dip my carry to.
i did a lott of research the last few months/weeks.
if i hear another " hi guys this is fonzie" i will go completly insane ..
https://www.youtube.com/user/DipYourCarcom

you cant realy compare it with a good spraypaint job.. but its a nice cheap alternetive
the glossifier is a good choice, it will make the dip last longer and make it more shiny.
a friend of mine has let his GTti flash dipped by cb customs last week.
looks good...  they ask about 1100euro for a complete dip..
i thought that would be to much money if you ask me.

i am letting it get dipped at spraydip.nl that will cost me about 400-500 euros
my carry needs some welding and i was planning on painting it myself with a roller.
a dip job cant realy compare with a good sprayjob but i was planning on rolling it so this would be a nicer option.
and for 400 euros i am willing to take the chance.

i am thinking about white also...
but deep sea blue pearl i realy love to
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYMDA8-jqxs

but i think going for antoher colour will make ugly crossover places like the inner side of the door etc etc
and painting it in white dip means i can give it some small resprays myself in time.
a one of a kind colour you cant buy in spraycans at your local shop..

Cool Scotia, you think they'll give us extra discount if we bring in two Hijets together for a white dip? Wink

I assume 400-500 is just for the dipping and the paint?

I'm leaning more and more towards white. Would be cool to add some stripes afterwards. Nothing drastic, just some thin subtle eighties-style stripes on the side pannels that look like they could've been factory made. Maybe even the original Hijet-striping.

For an absolute beginner like me this forum is an extremely useful source of information and knowledge. I've read many many threads the past two months. And I'm beginning to understand most of the posts now.

Thanks for the extra info. What I meant was that I think that you have to deliver the car paintjob-ready right? So stripped (and sanded and with an undercoat if you want to have the best result). Or do they also do all the preparations for that price?

Why did you decide to not do it yourself? Because you would not trust yourself to do it or because you're lazy? It is cheap though so I don't blame you anyway Wink

you should read up some more on it.
their is no sanding down when you use plastidip.
its completely different from the normal painting proces Wink
i would remove the mirrors and front and back bumper en the surroundings from my headlights.

i would do that myself because i dont trust them to do those things correctly.
but normaly when you dip it you dont have to remove anything..

i have to let my arches get welded first
then i am going to use putty and sand it down till its ok
then put on layer of primer and sand that down
then a couple of layers of paint and then its ready for the dip.

i have a couple of dents i want to get rid of to first
so i have some work to do first

I read that it is advisable to sand and undercoat if you want to have the best and most durable result. Isn't that true? Also, 2-3 years is wayyy too short imho, on some sites it says that it should be much more durable than that.

The former owner of my Hijet also dipped the van - in two tone matte red/matte white. I didn't like it so tried to take everything off only to discover that he undercoated the red part with gray primer and by the looks of it sanded the part where the matte white part came...

Re: PlastiDip.

if you put on just plastidip it will not last more then a couple of years
if you apply a clearcoat on top of it it will last max 8 years theyve told the guy i know with the 1100euro dipjob.

i think that offcourse if you have a rougher surface then it will grip more
but the main character of plastidip is that you can apply it to your nice looking factory paintjob
and when youre tired of it you can just remove it without leaving any marks or something.
so sanding down isnt something normally done with diping a car.

i think that your hijet may have some rustrepair or damage that has been worked on.
its not necessary normaly to primer or sand the car when its getting dipped

the reason i am not doing it myself is that its not worth the hassle for 400 euro
buying a sprayset will probably cost about 200-250euro
then i will probably fuck it up or something like that Laughing

after that there isnt a guarentee that such a cheap set will last for years.
worst case scenario i fuck up the dipjob and the spraygun is crap and will brake down.
for 200 euro more i can let somebody do it that knows what their doing
and no work for me cheers

i used to big jobs like that myself..
i now know from experiance that if i have the money i should let somebody else do it Laughing Laughing

The Chinaman sells all kinds of crazy stuff you can add to your dip. Stuff that changes color when temperature changes or pearlescent or glitter or even this: https://youtu.be/SMGzzz2jf2s

Thanks Raggy, I'm gonna use those!

Scotia, I sent the spraydip guys an email and they replied straight away:

Dippen in wit compleet 299.00 euro

Schoonmaken
Ontvetten
inpakken
Ontvetten 2
predip hechting
Dippen 7 laags wit
Topcoat 2 laags hoog glans
Schoonmaken en afleveren
Not too bad a deal. Gonna think about it!

i think the 300 xtra for clearcoat is to much if you ask me.. Rolling Eyes
there is no xtra work between the dip and then the layer of clearcoat..so what they base their price on is a mysteri for me
he says because of the metarial.... that makes no sense...clearcoat isnt worth 300euros.
i dont think i am going for the xtra coat.. it will be to expensive for me

for 600 i would rather buy a set myself and try it
300/400 is the most i am willing to pay..

The thing is: if it just lasts for 2 years, it isn't worth any investment for me. I'd like the color to be permanent. But you're right it is a bit expensive as compared to the normal job. I'll ask him why Smile
